Rwanda announced Thursday that it will allow all Africans to travel visa-free to the country, becoming the latest nation on the continent to announce such a measure aimed at boosting free movement of people. President Paul Kagame made the announcement on Thursday and highighted the potential of Africa as “a unified tourism destination” for a continent that still relies on 60% of its tourists from outside Africa. Other countries that allow Africans to enter their territories without visas are Gambia, Benin and Seychelles.
People traveling on passports from India or any one of more than 50 African nations will be obliged to pay the fee, El Salvador’s port authority said in a statement on it’s website dated Oct. 20.
The money raised will be used to improve the nation’s main international airport, the authority added.
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele this week met Brian Nichols, US assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, to discuss “efforts to address irregular migration,” among other topics. US Customs and Border Patrol encountered a record 3.2 million migrants across the country in fiscal year 2023, which ended in September.
Many migrants from Africa and elsewhere make it to the US via Central America.
Including VAT, the additional cost is $1,130 from travelers from the affected countries. The new fee took effect Oct. 23 and was imposed due to increased use of the country’s main international airport, according to the statement.
Airlines will be required to notify Salvadoran authorities daily of passengers who come from a list of 57 countries in Africa, and India.
Payment deadline to join the group: 2nd week in November
Kenyan President William Ruto has announced plans to eliminate visa requirements for all African visitors by the end of 2023 to enhance trade and foster closer economic ties with other African nations.
He made this announcement during his keynote address at the Three Basins Climate Change Conference in Brazzaville, Congo.
"By the end of this year, no African will need a visa to enter Kenya. The time has come to understand the importance of doing trade between us," he said.
President Ruto also stressed the importance of addressing the current low levels of intra-African trade and put forward a proposal to reduce customs tariffs across the continent to accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
According to him, “It is time we realize the importance of trading among ourselves and allowing goods, services, people and ideas to move freely across the continent.” He added that trade among East African Community countries had grown significantly due to these initiatives.
Kenya recently eliminated visa requirements for Angolan citizens. During the African Private Sector Dialogue Conference on Free Trade in May, President William Ruto expressed that this move might signify the last occasion African delegates need to pay for visas when visiting Kenya.
Earlier in February, Kenya and Eritrea reached an agreement to permanently eliminate visa requirements for their citizens. In July, Kenya extended this privilege to nationals from Comoros and Senegal, allowing them to enter the country without visas. In August, Indonesia joined the list, becoming the third country within a month to receive visa-free access to Kenya.
The president also stressed the importance of acknowledging and incentivizing countries in tropical forest basins to protect their forests, underscoring the benefits of such actions for climate preservation.
The Amazon basin in South America, the Congo basin in Central Africa, and the Borneo-Mekong basin in Southeast Asia together make up 80 per cent of the world's rainforests and house around two-thirds of its biodiversity.
*African Nations To Relax Visa Restrictions, Push For More Direct Flights*
Kenya and Angola have become the latest African countries to announce plans to ease visa restrictions as part of efforts to improve air connectivity and spur bilateral trade. The move follows a similar agreement announced earlier this month between neighbors Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Kenya-Angola pact was confirmed after talks in Nairobi between Kenyan President William Ruto and his Angola counterpart João Lourenço. Ruto says trade between the nations has been on the rise in the past four years, but more needs to be done to unlock the underlying potential.
“There is a huge scope for these numbers to go up if we strengthen our interconnection,” he adds, saying that the countries intend to push for direct service between Kenya's and Angola’s capitals, Nairobi and Luanda.
According to data provided by OAG Schedules Analyser, the nations were last served by nonstop flights until the onset of the pandemic in March 2020. However, Kenya Airways’ weekly route between Nairobi and Luanda—which operated via Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, on the return leg—has not returned to the SkyTeam alliance member’s network.
To encourage the resumption of direct air service, a visa-free regime is being put in place to ease the free movement of people. “Angolans coming to Kenya will not require a visa,” Ruto says. “Angola will equally consider the same for Kenyans.”
