The ermine, also known as the short-tailed weasel (Mustela erminea), is Colorado’s smallest native carnivore. It is found throughout the state, but is most common in the mountains at moderate to high elevations. In the summer, the ermine has a chocolate brown coat with a light underbelly, but in the winter, it transforms to pure white except for a black tipped tail. This white winter coat phase is more likely what people are referring to as “ermine” in Colorado.
