Gibraltar Jewish Tours & Travel Gibraltar Jewish Tours - Visit the REAL Gibraltar with a worldclass guide… It is a wonderful holiday destination in of itself.

A visit to Gibraltar has become a must for the many yearly tourists arriving by Land, Sea & Air. The Rock has always been a stopping point for people traveling to other continents or choosing it as a home and settling down. What has attracted people to Gibraltar has been, among other things, its History. This spans from the Neanderthal right through to the Phoenicians, Carthaginian, Arabs, Spanis

h and finally British. Throughout the Arab, Spanish and British control of the Rock, we find a presence of a Jewish Settlement on the Rock. In the past few years as a seasoned guide, I have found many people who are truly interested in this subject, therefore, I’ve decided to make this my livelihood. I invite you to come and enjoy the sites and the living History from myself a Researcher and Historian on the subject. You are guaranteed to have a unforgettable and memorable trip from a local.

The blessing of Yam Hagadol is said where the two great seas meet.
This was enacted by Hebrew Sages thousands of years ago and is still said today.
Gibraltar has a bird's eye view of the Atlantic from the Upper Rock.
When Gibraltar was captured by the British they set up a Signal Station at the top of the Rock from where they could see what they called the "Gut" which was the Straits of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic met the Mediterranean.

Painting of Jacobo Azagury by Cruz Herrera.
Both artists portrayed Gibraltar, Morocco and the Campo de Gibraltar surrounding Gibraltar itself.
They both started their careers as artists in the late 19th and into the 20th century.
Jacobo dedicated a great deal of time sketching diffrent well know characters at the Petite Bar in Main Street.
He also sketched Jewish scenes-as did Cruz Herrara-who wasn't Jewish.
His flare and use of colours was a style in itself, something absolutely unique.
He was our first Jewish Artist and Painter.
Thankfully many of Jacobo Azagury's sketches and paintings are presently to be found in some Jewish Gibraltarian homes now a days.

This map of the Northern and Southern end of the Straits of Gibraltar shows how from the Rock of Gibraltar one can see the coming together of the Mediterranean, on the right, with the Alantic on the left of this picture.
Many Jewish people visiting this area say a special prayer when seeing both Seas converge and only, of course, when they are visible.
Gibraltar was known as Calpe during Roman times.
In the Gemara (the Jewish Oral Law) it mentions that Calpe (Gibraltar) is the Western limit or boundary of the land of Israel as mention by Rabbi Judah

The Jewish Market at the Commercial Square. The building in the picture is the Gibraltar Exchange which was built in 1817 and its cost came from a subscription made by the Merchants of Gibralgar of diffrent faiths, and inside its entrance Hall are marble plaques where one sees the names of all those who contributed to the building which eventually became the meeting place for the civilians when wanting to propose or protest against any decisions to or of the British ruling administration.

This is the building which today houses the Gibraltar Parliament although it was originally built in 1817 by the Merchants of Gibraltar as a Commercial Exchange where they would gather to discuss domestic affairs.
In its entrance and Hall one can see a list of all those who donated and subscribed so as to build the building. It is a cross section of people of all faiths and countries.
An example of conviviality and true mutual interest.

A photograph taken from Gibraltar towards Spain, this must have been taken before 1870 when the City that "grew" at that site became detached from the control of the City of San Roque, the City that today stands there being La Linea de la Concepsion.
At one time La Linea had a Jewish Community with a Synagogue whose scrolls were bought from Gibraltar.
It has a small Jewish Cementery which dates back to the 1880's where there only a few tombs seeing that those who died in La Linea would prefer to be buried in Gibraltar.
Some Jews did marry none Jews and that's why you still find Catholics bearing Jewish names in La Linea.

Encampments of Spanish Civilians escaping the War in the mainland seeking refuge in Gibraltar. There is a print of Gibraltar with the same sort of tents-furnished by the British Military-during the 1859-1860 war between Morocco and Spain. The amount of Jews escaping Morocco went into the thousands. Seeing that the Berbers were always using any excuse to attack and pillage the Jews. The Jews stayed in Gibraltar for near to a year. Some of them were buried here at the North Front Cemetery and presumably a small cemetery adjacent to it. This situation got to the ears of the London community who contacted the Gibraltar and started sending much needed Medical Assistance and other supplies. The none Jewish population were exemplary in every way assisting with soup kitchens which were set up for the Refugees once they got on shore. The Governor William Codrington assisted in every way possible. Eventually, when the war was over the Moroccan Jews thanked the Jewish Community and the people of Gibraltar. Yet, before that, they sent their thanks to the Emperor of Morocco for having secured their properties all over the country. During this time some of the Jewish Refugees chose other parts of the world to move to instead of returning to Morocco.

Castelo Real de Mogador. One of the Port cities held by the Portuguese before being captured by the Emperors of Morocco. This city was used by both Portuguese Crypto Jews and Moroccan Jews. The Jewish community started to leave Mogador during the end of the 18th century, mainly to the Azores. Some like the Elmaleh family, amongst others, made it to Gibraltar. There were marriage between Gibraltarian families who settled in Lisbon and families from Mogador.
