In 2009, in response to declining sea turtle populations, the Government of The Bahamas implemented a nation-wide ban on the harvesting of sea turtles to protect all species found in Bahamian waters. The catalyst for implementation occurred in 2008, after a highly publicized incident involving an adult loggerhead turtle in the capital of New Providence, created political uproar. However, enforcement of this ban is difficult due to lack of resources and the large ocean area and illegal harvesting of marine turtles still occurs.
GOOD NEWS:
Recently 2 people were fined in court ($2500, and $1500) for the illegal take of 2 Green Turtles in Grand Bahama. The turtles are being rehabilitated at CoralVita in Grand Bahama.
