New dates opened!
The new trail will span 58 miles and links Chicago and northern Indiana to New Buffalo.
Living room vibes. Comfy couch and chair. Vintage rocker. Fireplace. Treehouse views. Endless birds at the feeder.
It’s amazing what refinished floors and some paint will do. Technically a lot of paint: Most of the house had these mustard yellow or burgundy walls… Today the den has a super comfortable sleeper sofa and lounge chair from West Elm, some locally sourced antiques and a pretty decent book collection. We often start our day in the den with a cup of coffee and the Today Show. It’s also a great spot to see deer walking thru the neighborhood. Eventually we plan to replace the wood stove with an east to use gas version.
When we bought this house in January 2020 we had no idea we’d be in lockdown just a few months later. One project we’re particularly proud of is the kitchen, which we did ourselves. We picked warm green cabinets, with butcher block counters and no uppers. Swipe for the before photo. What do you think?

Big Announcement for the Marquette Greenway
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) $17.8 million in RAISE grant funds to complete the Marquette Greenway from Chicago to New Buffalo. This represents the culmination of nearly five years of effort to secure this source of funding.
NIRPC released the Marquette Greenway Poster Plan back in 2009 and since then, over 30 miles of trail has either been built or fully funded, leaving nearly 26 miles remaining to complete the trail, which includes 3.5 miles from the Indiana border to downtown New Buffalo.
The amount awarded falls short of the $23 million request, but is more than helpful to secure the remaining funds from traditional state and federal sources, which combined sets us on course to complete the entire route within five years.
The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission and the Friends of Berrien County Trails worked with NIRPC to ensure that the Michigan portion of the trail was included in the overall grant proposal. It is still being determined what amount of this new funding will be dedicated to the Michigan portion of the trail. The Michigan portion of the trail has $3.6 million in funds secured from the Michigan Department of Transportation (Transportation Alternative Program), Michigan Department of Natural Resources (Trust Fund and Recreation Passport Programs), The Pokagon Fund, New Buffalo Township, New Buffalo City and USDA Rural Development. Some local fundraising may still be needed and will be spearheaded by the Friends of Berrien County Trails. It is expected that the Michigan portion of the Marquette Greenway will start construction in 2022.
The U.S. DOT has yet to release an official statement or list of projects. As soon as this happens, NIRPC will begin working with the nine participating municipalities (this includes New Buffalo Township and City) and the Indiana Dunes National Park to commence the work.

Bruce Jones remembers a time when he would ride through the woods just west of Andrews University. There was no precise trail then. But the up-and-down terrain provided a challenge for mountain bikers. More than 30 years later, Jones is proud to look around to see what these trails have become, and....
