🏛️ Discovering Balkan culture 🏛️

As the center of croatian culture, Zagreb is the home to one of the first Art Pavillons in this part of Europe. Designed by the viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, it was opened in December 1898. Located in the city zone of the so called "Lenuci or Green Horseshoe" (Lenucijeva/Zelena potkova), it is home to the most important visual and cultural events of modern Croatia. The building has been restaurated in 2013.

🏙️Discovering Balkan - City Trip🏙️

The historic city of Brașov, located in Transilvania, Romania🇷🇴, is a must see for fans of historic sightseeing. The first romanian school on todays territory of Romania is founded at this place, among with the oldest romanian Bible, the first romanian printing press and the first romanian schoolbook.
The most popular sight is the Black Church (Biserica Neagră), which got its name after it was partially destroyed in 1689 and left the walks black.

On March 1. Bulgarians celebrate the Baba Marta Day. This very old tradition, that dates back to the pre christian period, is the celebration of the begining of spring. For this occasion, people make red-white bracelets and small dolls, which are called Martenitsa.
The name of the holiday, which means Grandma March, is based on folklor legends about a lady, who is in a bad mood and the sun comes out at the begining of spring only when she smiles.
Besides Bulgaria🇧🇬, there are very similar traditions in Romania🇷🇴, northern Greece🇬🇷, North Macedonia🇲🇰 and among bulgarian and romanian minorities in eastern Serbia🇷🇸.

The White Tower of Thessaloniki was built during the byzantine period as a fortification. When the Ottomans took the city over in 1430, it became a prison and a place of mass executions. Today the White Tower of Thessaloniki is a monument with a museum and the symbol of the city.
