Don’t miss the opportunity to join fellow classicists for a multi-day immersive exploration of the architecture of Washington D.C!

The 2022 Christopher H. Browne Washington DC Drawing Tour is a four-day program to intensely study, through measured and analytical field drawing, the rich diversity of architecture and urbanism of the Federal City of Washington, DC, led by instructor Stephen Chrisman, Partner at Ferguson & Shamamian Architects, LLP. The techniques of careful field drawing in a sketchbook will be explored in-depth, and have been used by architects and designers beginning in the Renaissance to document as well as utilize the precedents in new design.

The program, which takes place from May 12th to May 15th, will feature opportunities to study a range of architectural scales and subjects, including urbanism, plans and elevations, exterior stone detailing, interiors, and the study of the classical elements, including the orders. Each day will conclude with a review and discussion of the drawings.

If you can believe it, this is the *restrained* pool at Hearst Castle. The Roman Pool is an indoor alternative to the sprawling Neptune Pool, and as spectacular as it is, it was seldom used. Such was the vastness of the estate designed by architect Julia Morgan for the publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst.

A trailblazing architect, Julia Morgan designed over 700 buildings in California, leaving an indelible mark on the architecture of the Golden State, including the sprawling Hearst Castle. A woman of many firsts, Morgan was the first woman admitted to the architecture program at l’École des Beaux-Arts in 1898, the first woman in California to be granted an architect’s license, and recently she was the first woman to earn the AIA Gold Medal for her pioneering achievements.

On March 22, 2022, Julia Morgan’s sesquicentennial year, Victoria Kastner—the longtime official historian at Hearst Castle—will give a talk centered around her new book, “Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect,” published by Chronicle Books. Drawing on Morgan’s unpublished letters and recently discovered diaries, Kastner provides the first comprehensive portrait of this architect’s inspiring career and private life.

In the late 1800s, if you were a person of any means in New York or Brooklyn, you needed to belong to a social club. These were hubs of upper middle class/upper-class activities in both cities, with clubhouses popping up all over the place. Members of these clubs spared no expense in utilizing the latest architectural trends and trying to one-up each other. This building on Putnam Avenue in Clinton Hill was built for the Lincoln Club. The club was initially founded for local Republicans in the neighborhood but would drop its political affiliation. They hired Brooklyn architect Rudolph L. Das to design the Queen Anne masterpiece, although I see a lot of Romanesque Revivals, which were completed in 1889. However, due to changing tastes, the Lincoln Club disbanded like so many others. In 1931 the club officially dissolved, and in 1940, the building was sold to the Independent Order of Mechanics of the Western Hemisphere. As far as I can tell, it is still owned by them. It was landmarked on May 12th, 1981.
