The past few days have been eventful. Three of us from West Coast Canyoning—Georgia, Felipe, and FX—traveled to Mexico for a canyoning meet-up called RIC. Unfortunately, due to political issues, the event was canceled. So, we decided to create our own adventure and explore the canyons of Querétaro. One of our main goals was to tackle the renowned Cañón del Infiernillo.

Yesterday, as we reached the third rappel, a member of our international group suffered a broken leg while jumping. I’m proud to share that our team, with support from local canyoneers and other international participants, successfully coordinated her rescue. The entire operation took several hours, but we safely brought her out of the canyon. Our team has received praise for our skill, professionalism, and leadership in managing an efficient and effective rescue. Below is a thank-you note from the injured canyoneer.

On a happy note, we managed to run this 5-star canyon today and were rewarded with a spectacular and fun venue!

Message from the injured Canyoneer to FX:

First I wanted to say that thank you for everything , for taking the leadership of the situation and taking me out of the canyon , I believe I owe you my rescue

You and the others were very efficient to my eyes
And maybe you think oh i could have been done better, but with all things happening language barrier, notice of water, cold water , I think I was a very positive result !

You were an angel to me and I would never forget that 🩵🩵🩵

This month, our project with the Siska Nation to study and survey fish passage in their creek exemplifies a meaningful step toward reconciliation. By collaborating with the First Nation to reclaim and manage their land, we support their efforts to restore traditional practices and enhance environmental stewardship.

As we observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, it’s crucial to recognize the ongoing impacts of residential schools on Indigenous communities. Our project aligns with this day by promoting healing and empowerment, honoring the legacy of those who suffered, and reaffirming the importance of Indigenous knowledge in land management.

By engaging with the Siska Nation, we are not only addressing ecological concerns but also acknowledging their rights and sovereignty. This partnership reflects a commitment to a shared future where Indigenous voices are heard, respected, and integrated into decision-making processes. Together, we are fostering a deeper understanding of the intergenerational trauma caused by residential schools, while also celebrating resilience and the importance of cultural identity.

Wearing orange on this day serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to support reconciliation and ensure that “Every Child Matters.”

How Do You Handle Nature’s Call in the Canyon?

🚫💩 Leave No Trace in the Canyon! 💩🚫

At West Coast Canyoning Adventures, we take the protection of our beautiful canyons very seriously. That’s why we strictly adhere to Leave No Trace principles—meaning ALL garbage and human waste must be carried out of the canyon.

Here’s what you need to know:

Plan Ahead: Use the washroom before meeting us at The Outbound Station. They offer facilities for patrons, so grab a coffee or snack to support this awesome local business!

Pack Smart: Bring minimal-waste lunch items. This helps reduce what you need to pack out, and makes it easier to keep the canyon pristine.

WAG Bags for Emergencies Only: We provide special WAG bags for emergencies, but it’s best to avoid needing them by being prepared.

Together, we can keep these wild places beautiful and clean for everyone to enjoy. 🌲💧

So, What is Canyoning?

West Coast Canyoning Adventure is hosted by FX Gagnon, a certified Canyoning Guide (Canyon Guides International) and owner of West Coast Canyoning Adventures. His mission is to protect our canyons, raise public safety awareness and safely grow the sport of Canyoning on the West Coast.

So, What is Canyoning?

Canyoning puts an emphasis on aesthetics and fun rather than pure difficulty. Canyoning, or Canyoneering (in the US), is traveling in canyons using a variety of techniques that may include other outdoor activities such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, rappelling (abseiling) and swimming. Are you ready to learn the basics of canyoning skills? Here are some of the points FX will cover: - How to check rappel gear - How to prepare for the descent - How to set up the rappel - How to rappel down
