Full statement below:
It has come to our attention that there have been allegations re: the legitimacy of the Indisputably Researched Virtual Walking Tour of St Davids’ claims to be “indisputably researched”, with suggestions the tour has not been researched at all and presents an “extremely generic” virtual tour that could be of any city.
Here at the Nacydw Heritage Awards, we take these allegations indisputably seriously.
We take pride in the amount of research that goes into the many tours provided in the St Davids area, which is one of the reasons why we created a prize for Most Verifiably Accurate Walking Tour of St Davids, and it is very disappointing that one of the operators nominated for such a prestigious award would exploit the good nature of the public in this manner.
Claims suggest that the virtual attendee is led to believe that they are in a realistic virtual portrayal of St Davids by simply using “placeholder” names for all landmarks that could be interchangeable with any city. They would have got away with it had they left it at St Davids Cathedral, but their undoing came through the inclusion of the St Davids Zoo, St Davids Castle, the St Davids Ice Skating Rink, and the St Davids Red Light District. We would like to make it clear that such ill-researched material could be incredibly damaging to the city’s reputation and frankly it is tantamount to slander.
For the record, St Davids does not and will never have an ice-skating rink.
While we are aware of the many retail establishments in the area, we are concerned that the tour also implies that there is just a single shop called the St Davids shop which, due to a glitch, sells only St David’s’s branded candles.
We are sorry to say that we have made the decision to revoke this tour’s nomination with immediate effect. We will also be looking into claims about the virtual host’s “glitching”, which has made the tour less than family friendly.
Sincerely,
The Panel
