Including Leeds, Loughborough, Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Warwick, Derby, Manchester and more... LU:ST started back in 2005 as a way for all the university students who jumped at Langar to have people to jump and socialise with at the airfield, even if there was no one from their own uni about. It has become an important part of skydiving at Langar, and although some of the more ‘mature’ skydiv
ers at Langar may on occasion be seen rolling their eyes at our antics, we bring a youthful enthusiasm and lots of skydiving not to mention epic socialising ;-)
The introduction of the LU:ST t-shirts, and the sheer size and noise of the members, be it on socials or in the plane, led to the group being affectionately known as ‘the LU:ST army’ and gave us another idea for a social! In 2007 during one of the big parties at Langar, we realised there were enough LU:ST students on the airfield to create a university formation record. (the wonders of planning in the bar) The same year we managed to fill the plane with only LU:ST members – including the pilot (well, we gave them a t-shirt!)
LU:ST teams have also dominated the BCPA league in recent years, with both Loughborough and Warwick taking home the trophy. We also won one or two of the boat races at BCPA events, although you’ll excuse me for not remembering the details. We currently have a really wide range of experience levels, which means we can all learn from each other. We have also built up a wide range of kits which we all share and use free of charge, which helps us all to save money. There are older skydivers, some of whom have graduated now but still play a huge part in LU:ST, who are able to provide advice, support and guidance to new committees, with younger, newer skydivers bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to keep us all on our toes! I helped to create LU:ST because, when I started, there was no such community in place, and as my uni club was relatively small, we stayed in our little group, meaning we didn’t really get to know many other skydivers. It can be a really daunting experience to turn up at a drop zone not knowing anyone, with experienced skydivers rushing around and no one really able to give up the time to help you. But if we can keep LU:ST as strong in the future as it has been in the past, Skydive Langar will retain its friendly atmosphere, and new skydivers will continue to feel welcome. By Chris Cook
