Canoeing through the 29 islands and birdwatching are arguably the best tourist activities at Lake Bunyonyi. Still, they are not the only ones, historical tours of the Punishment Island (where girls who got pregnant before marriage were left to die), and Dr. Sharp’s Island, as well as zip-lining across the lake, are intriguing options to consider.

Up until the 20th century, special islands called Akampena (Punishment Island) on Lakes Bunyonyi and Mutanda were set aside as death traps for unmarried girls who got themselves pregnant. This act was meant to discourage premarital relations. The girls were left by their kin, to die of starvation or to drown if they attempted to swim back to shore. Their salvation often came in the form of poor young bachelors looking to find dowry-free wives, at the risk of banishment from the community.

Lake Bunyonyi ('place of many little birds') is undoubtedly the loveliest lake in Uganda where you have only the birds for company - Lonely Planet. Best of all – unlike many lakes in East Africa – Bunyonyi is bilharzia, crocodile, and hippo free, and so its crystal-clear waters are all yours to swim in.

Muhabura is a 4127-meter high mountain shared between Uganda and Rwanda. The name “Muhabura” is derived from the Rufumbira language which means “guide” because the locals could see it regardless of where they were acting as a guide for them on the way home. One can hike this volcano within a day taking between 6 – 8 hours uphill and downhill. On a clear day, Muhabura offers amazing views of Lakes Edward and George, other Virunga summits as well as the breathtaking Rwenzori Mountains.

Most visitors are drawn to the region to visit the gorillas in the Bwindi ‘Impenetrable’ or Mgahinga National Parks. But one can also hike these mountains, watch birds and visit the Batwa community.
