On this day, 700 years ago, a woman was burnt at the stake in Kilkeny. The first of its kind in Europe in 1324 on 3rd November.
Alice Kytler was a wealthy woman and money lender who married four times and survived four husbands who left her all their wealth. This essentially, along with a few other aligned factors, caused one of the most terrible acts in Kilkenny.
The burning of some of the Knights Templars accused of herecy and sorcery in Avignon in France at the papal capital may have inspired Kilkennys Bishop Le drede to mimic similar actions. The Bishop had lived in Avignon at the time of the Templars downfall, where he would have seen and learned such things. Le drede soon later became the bishop of Ossory. He accused Alice Kytler in Kilkenny of herecy and sorcery because she outlived her husband, and he felt she had poisoned them.
If you were accused of these facts, you had to be burnt alive, and all your wealth went to the church.Alice lost her case but escaped from the clenches of the Bishop. He now was livid and knew that people wanted a witch burning. He abducted a maid of Alice's named Petronella de Midi, who was flogged through six parishes and was set alight in Kilkenny. This was the first scenario whereby a woman was trialled for herecy and sorcery, and whereby a woman was burnt at the stake in Europe.
