The Cromwellian attack on Ireland in 1649 has been a story still in the minds of the Irish . Simon Reeves in Ireland documentary is a really good cover of Irelands past and its divisions through time and colonisation. Yet Simons chat with author Tom O' Reilly gives the authors view that Oliver Cromwell was not so bad whilst waring on Ireland. He even wrote a book about it. He bases much of this on the study of Cromwells letters.

Although Cromwell was very well able to write in a dignified way, it was always to justify or blame others for his atrocities so as to escape charges and lose support from his supporters.I beg to disagree with Tom O'Reilly as it is well known how Cromwell would purposely get away with the murder and torture of innocent lives by either blaming others for it or writing that he had nothing to do with it.

The danger of historical opinion.

On this day, 700 years ago, a woman was burnt at the stake in Kilkeny. The first of its kind in Europe in 1324 on 3rd November.

Alice Kytler was a wealthy woman and money lender who married four times and survived four husbands who left her all their wealth. This essentially, along with a few other aligned factors, caused one of the most terrible acts in Kilkenny.

The burning of some of the Knights Templars accused of herecy and sorcery in Avignon in France at the papal capital may have inspired Kilkennys Bishop Le drede to mimic similar actions. The Bishop had lived in Avignon at the time of the Templars downfall, where he would have seen and learned such things. Le drede soon later became the bishop of Ossory. He accused Alice Kytler in Kilkenny of herecy and sorcery because she outlived her husband, and he felt she had poisoned them.

If you were accused of these facts, you had to be burnt alive, and all your wealth went to the church.Alice lost her case but escaped from the clenches of the Bishop. He now was livid and knew that people wanted a witch burning. He abducted a maid of Alice's named Petronella de Midi, who was flogged through six parishes and was set alight in Kilkenny. This was the first scenario whereby a woman was trialled for herecy and sorcery, and whereby a woman was burnt at the stake in Europe.

Great to have attended the opening of the display of the Red Book of Ossory at St Canices Cathedral Kilkenny. This is so exciting to now have this book in Kilkenny. Well done to all involved at St Canices Cathedral.

Some great events in St Canices Cathedral due to its new display of the 'Red Book of Ossory' as seen in picture above.

The 14th century book was developed by the cathedrals Bishop Le Drede at the time. This book is but a stones throw from the Medieval Mile Museum where you will find a book called the Liber Primus. Both extremely important books from its times. All we need now is my ultimate wish and that's the book of Pottlerath which is held in Bodleian Library. Kilkenny would then hold some of the rarest books in Ireland.

I will definitely be booking myself in for Dr John Gillis lecture. His conservation expertise is rare and he developed the conservation plan for the Red book. I believe three stands were specifically designed to hold the book over the year on display at the Cathedral.

The Knights Templars

Did you know that William Marshall who built Kilkenny Castle and established St Marys Church was a volunteer Knights Templar. If he were to actually become a templar he would have had to become a monk. This would not have enabled him to marry out Irish Princess Isabel de Clare. Which he eventually went on to do. Even so his connections were close to the templars as in death he was and is buried in the famous Temple church in London . His stone effigy is in prime position along side his son. I often wonder if Kilkenny is holding alot more secrets about the templars and one of their favourite characters who essentially started the establishment of Kilkenny as a walled medieval city. There are indications of templar symbolism around in the city, maybe from aspiring individuals wishing to show connection or admiration. Just a thought.
