The Serengeti and Ndutu areas in Tanzania are fantastic places to witness the Great Migration from January through February. During this time, the migration herds, consisting of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, gather in the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu region in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This period coincides with the calving season, where thousands of wildebeest calves are born, creating a unique spectacle as predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are drawn to the area.
The lush plains provide excellent grazing for the herds, making it a prime time to visit these regions to see the migration up close. The calving season also offers thrilling predator-prey interactions and is ideal for photographers, as it combines dramatic landscapes with rich wildlife action.
For clients interested in this experience, encourage them to book in advance, as lodges and camps fill up quickly during this popular period.

Lionesses teach their cubs essential survival skills through observation and guided practice. From a young age, cubs watch the adults hunt and interact within the pride. As they grow, lionesses encourage the cubs to play, which helps them develop coordination and hunting instincts. When the cubs are ready, lionesses bring them on hunting trips, allowing them to practice stalking and pouncing on prey. They gradually expose cubs to real hunting scenarios, letting them learn through trial and error while staying close by to ensure their safety. This patient and gradual teaching prepares cubs to eventually contribute to the pride as skilled hunters.

Leopards take their food up into trees mainly to protect it from scavengers and other predators. Although powerful and skilled hunters, leopards often live in areas with animals like hyenas, lions, and wild dogs, which can outnumber or overpower them and steal their kills. By hoisting their prey into trees, leopards secure their meal from these competitors.
The process of taking food up a tree shows the leopard's remarkable strength and agility. After making a successful kill, a leopard uses its powerful jaws and neck muscles to grip and carry the carcass, often hoisting it high into branches. Leopards can lift prey almost as heavy as themselves into trees, showcasing their muscular build. Once in the tree, they can feed undisturbed, sometimes returning to the meal over several days if it’s a large enough catch. This behavior is not only a survival strategy but also a unique adaptation that allows them to thrive even in areas with significant competition for resources.

When lions are on a kill, they get very aggressive, and they get aggressive with each other, as food is their source of life. When they have killed something, there is a hierarchy that comes into play, where the more dominant lions will feed on the kill first. So in all cases, the male lions will feed first, as they always dominate over all the females because they are bigger, and are more dominant. They will feed until they’re happy and when they’re a bit fuller, they will allow other lions to come join them eventually.

Play is much more than just a fun way to pass the time. Play teaches lions cubs how to grasp their prey, how to move with one another (important when bringing down a large animal as a group), and develops overall confidence. Unlike most cats, lions are highly social; physically touching each other aids in bonding and overall health maintenance―much in the same way as it does with humans.
Play also enriches young cubs minds. Mental stimulation is triggered by playing with their Mum, Dad or each other.
