Christmas Past...
Dating back to 1780 as home to the Chapman family on lands once owned by The Knights Hospitaller, but granted to Benjamin Chapman a Captain in Cromwell's New Model Army in 1667, Killua Castle was abandoned in the 1940's and fell into ruin. The desolate ivy clad hulk roofless with gaping window and door spaces seemed destined for oblivion like other fallen houses of that period in Ireland. Fate, in the shape of Allen Sanguines-Krause and his wife Lorena, proved different with Allen first seeing a picture of the ruin in 1999 and he purchased what he seen as one of the most romantic demesnes in Ireland with its familial links to Lawrence of Arabia. A 21 year labour of love began with the Castle essentially being restored from scratch to a 21st Century home that reflects the owners interest in art and history. The estate is now operated by the Montpascal foundation a centre for regenerative farming, conservation and gastronomy with the exquisite Twelve Points Restaurant now open for Friends of Killua available on the website www.killuacastle.com.
The Ghosts of Christmas past are bound to stir again in the corridors of Killua this Saturday 9th December as Killua host a very special Christmas Fair with artisan food and craft producers, their own gourmet Killua Food Truck and Santa Claus will be there too. Open from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm entrance for cars is their main entrance not the N52 entrance. Entry to the Fair is free, there is a €5 per car fee for parking and a Santa Visit with present is also available for €5. Do take part in the wonderful Christmas Raffle with €7k worth of prizes, €5 per strip, 5 strips for €20. Have your fivers ready for a fantastic Christmas at the Castle outing in The Kingdom of Midhe for all the family on Saturday 9th Dec.

Wilde at Heart...
The Hunter Gatherers moved with their food in the Mesolithic age using shamanic practices to enter the mind of their prey, always respecting and honouring the source of their sustenance. The early Neolithic grain and cattle farmers that spread into Ireland changed the way of the World leading to food surpluses and the creation of settlements and ceremonial spaces such as Loughcrew Cairns in The Kingdom of Midhe . The practice of the Hunter Gatherer is kept alive today by the exquisite Wilde Dining who offer "a nomadic fine dining experience in the Forests, Caves and Islands" of Ireland and in particular at one of their favourite venues the magical Loughcrew Estate in the shadow of those foreboding 5'500 year old Megalithic Cairns. A Masquerade Banquet in Loughcrew House takes place on 29th December with a Theme of Surrealism and on Friday 5th January 2024 the Widle Dining Experience returns to the rustic Mill House in Loughcrew Historic Gardens for an intimate dining event. Find Tickets and Gift Vouchers on their page and take a walk on the Wilde Side this New Year....

Inspire....
The primeval landscape of Loughcrew Cairns shrouded in the mists of time as a place of origin not just for The Kingdom of Midhe but for the island of Ireland served as an anchor for the early Neolithic grain farmers as they adapted to a different climate using the solar wheel as a guide. The traces of the past still linger and inspire artists and craft workers today. Choose a Christmas gift that reflects this by selecting a framed print from the award winning John Sheridan Photography who has a fantastic selection of his captures of local places of interest available to order. An Artist that draws on her own depth of knowledge to interpret the landscape is Margaret Mckenna Art who has a beautiful 2024 Walking through Legends Calendar available along with Fine Art Giclée prints for sale on her website with postal dates on www.margaretmckenna.ie.
Using his local hedgerows around monastic Fore in North Westmeath Craft Stickmaker Liam Leahy uses, Hazel, Blackthorn and Holly to produce distinctive walking sticks of all shape and form, each matured for two years and some finished with a built in deer antler whistle. Find Liam Leahy on FaceBook to book a visit to his magical workshop. Another artist taking inspiration from the stories that abound in the Kingdom is Kim Gaffney Art who recently launched her Art Book, Orwin and Sebana in Crover House Hotel on the shores of Lough Sheelin and her prints from that are currently on display in Ramor Theatre until December 15th. Visit www.kimgaffneyart.com to order both the book and prints like her little Robin. Again postage dates for Ireland and around the World are listed...

O'Holy Night....
The Dove of the Church, Colmcille in Gaelic and Columba in Latin was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland studying under St Finnian of Clonard in The Kingdom of Midhe in the 6th C. He was the Patron Saint of Derry, gave his name to Glencolmcille and founded the all important monastic site in Kells, Meath, Ireland in the mid 6th Century. A dispute over a book with St Finnian led to Colmcilles banishment from Ireland and his mission to Scotland where he founded on Iona. Two hundred years after his death what is now known as The Book of Kells was written in his honour and Kells Monastery was refounded in the early ninth Century with the very book by the Ionan Monks fleeing Viking raids on their Island community.

The Return of the Light...
Light has been central to our early existence from the measurement of the Sun as it passes through the seasons. Set in stone by our early Neolithic ancestors at Loughcrew Cairns in The Kingdom of Midhe the light entering the chamber and tracing the Equinox Stone determined the path of The Cailleach. At the Home of Light Loughcrew, man has created a vision of light in the dark of the Cailleach's Winter to inspire and pierce the gloom to foretell the coming Winter Festivities originally measured at the Winter Solstice at Brú na Bóinne - Newgrange and Knowth . At Loughcrew Estate for a month of weekends from 24th Nov. to 23rd Dec light springs forth from the darkness with Loughcrew Wonderland opening on Friday 24th November with the arrival of Santa Claus to the estate. Book your lightshow tickets which include a visit to Santa and small present on www.loughcrew.com .

Food for Thought....
Celebrating the true meaning of Samhain as an end of Summer Harvest Festival, which this year falls on the 7th November, in The Kingdom of Midhe is the unique eclectic collection of food and drink experiences organised by Boyne Valley Flavours in and around the historic town of Kells, Meath, Ireland which hosts this annual event.
Food and the development of farming practices has been crucial to the Kingdom since the early Neolithic Grain Farmers centred on Loughcrew Cairns measured the seasons around The Cailleach. Feasting, the communal practice of the tribe in celebrating both acheivement and marking time is a remnant of our past from the Dumb Supper to our Harvest Festivals that has been revived in its original form here with a cornucopia of events in The Samhain Festival of Food & Culture from the 3rd - 5th November with full details on www.boynevalleyflavours.ie.
Many local sites feature in the packed programme including visits to Killua Castle Martry Mill The Market Clonmellon Sheridans Cheesemongers and the bastion base of the excellent Headfort Arms Hotel hosting many events. A Moveable Feast.....

Walking through Legends....
Using the ancient landscape around Loughcrew Cairns as her inspiration Margaret Mckenna Art has built up a large following over the years as a very accomplished artist. Her depictions of the land beneath us in The Kingdom of Midhe draws the viewer into the mysteries of the past and confronts the wonder of the visceral with human forms of legends of lore. Grá mo Chroí...
A tragic love story still lingers in the mists that rise down by Lough Sheelin's shores where the echoes of a turbulent past resonate over the still waters.
On the edge of the pale in the 17th Century a love story across the barricades from the Crown fortresss of Ross Castle to the Rebel Crover Castle on a rocky island went against the grain. Sebana the daughter of the ruling Nugent Norman dynasty and Prince Orwen son of the O'Reilly Cheiftain began a clandestine affair doomed from the start where hopes were dashed and death replaced life but where the young lovers are entwined for eternity in the one grave above Lough Sheelin.
The Legend springs back to life with the publication of the story as an Art Book by the very talented Kim Gaffney Art . This evening on RTÉ 1 after the news the story will feature on Nationwide, next Thursday the 5th October the Official launch takes place in the majestic Crover House Hotel at 7.00pm and on Friday 13th October an exhibition of the paintings will be opened in Ramor Theatre Virginia running into November.

Harvest Season...
Samhain approaches and in places the Veil to the Otherworld thins and the living can be pulled into the restless realm. To protect against this in olden times a piece of lit turf was carried in a hollowed out turnip and a pig skin mask was worn to literally play dead and survive the night. This tradition made it's way to America where Jack O'Lantern was born. This Sunday 1st October a chance to stock up on Giant Pumpkins at Collinstown Farmers Market inside and outside 11.30 am - 1.30 pm with artisan food stalls, fragrant candles, bespoke jewellery and the ever important hot chocolate and coffee.
