Northern Snakehead - How to Target - Maryland Department of Natural ResourcesA video produced by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources designed to pro...

Request for Snakehead Research Proposals
In the Chesapeake Bay region, northern snakehead inhabit shallow, vegetated water bodies, where most traditional fishing gear (nets, traps, seines) is inefficient.

We are asking high school students to help find new methods to increase capture efficiency and catch rates of snakeheads, in places where bowfishing or electrofishing cannot be used. Successful designs will be publicized to help broadly increase capture efficiency for the general public, management agencies, and/or commercial or recreational harvesters.

Eligibility: Any Maryland resident student in high school or vocational program, ages 14 through 19. Proposals may be submitted by a team of students or a single student, or simply one student representing a team. Mentors are allowed to participate in projects, but all aspects of the work from proposal, to ex*****on, and to final presentation should be the work of the student(s).

Northern snakeheads were identified in a pond in Crofton, Maryland in 2002. Since then, northern snakeheads have also been found in the Potomac River, throughout most of the Chesapeake Bay and in the rivers of New York, Pennsylvania, and Arkansas. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources have implemented a new tagging program for invasive northern snakeheads to monitor their population in the Black River and Chesapeake Bay. Both agencies are placing yellow or blue tags on 500 northern snakeheads that could be rewarded with a gift card of $10 or $200, depending on the tag. If you happen to catch a tagged northern snakehead, please contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the toll-free number 1-800-448-8322. Only harvested northern snakeheads with reported tags will qualify for gift cards. Most important of all, if you catch a northern snakehead, PLEASE DO NOT PUT THE FISH BACK IN THE WATER!

WHO IS LAUREN YOU ASK???

My name's Lauren, I'm a Maryland native and an avid outdoorsman. I forage, fish (even though I still have a lot to learn with that one), and first and foremost, I hunt. Hunting is my biggest passion; it's where I devote most of my free time and energy (and probably money). Inspired by those who've helped me learn throughout my hunting career thus far, I do what I can to help other new hunters enjoy this lifestyle that I love so much as both a mentor and a Maryland Hunter Safety Instructor.

Increased snakehead fish population could devastate bay ecosystem

www.wbaltv.com

CAMBRIDGE, Md. —
Scientists call the northern snakehead fish an apex predator that for years has plagued Maryland waters. Most recently, anglers say populations of the fish have ramped up, with the potential to devastate the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.
In shallow rivers interlacing parts of Blackwater Wildlife Refuge in Dorchester County, anglers like Caz Kenney gather by the number in a fight against an elusive fish called the snakehead.
"As somebody who has fished this refuge and the complex for 30 years of my life, you know, I've watched a lot of changes take place since the snakeheads have shown up," Kenney said. "We are in trouble here in the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and everything that's feeding it."
That trouble began in Maryland in the early 2000s when the snakehead, a fish native to Asia, was first discovered in Crofton. Since then, it has been spreading rapidly throughout parts of Maryland and other states, eating nearly anything.
"It has been steady, but rapid," said angler Eddie Bramble.
"You look at crayfish, you look at frogs, you look at ditches. I mean, ditches used to be filled with crayfish here in Dorchester County. There's no crayfish in the ditches anymore. There's no mudbug holes as you walk the ditches. They're not here, they've been ate, and the only thing really capable of doing that damage is the snakehead. What people don't realize is that this fish only needs (a small amount of) water to thrive and feed and reproduce," Kenney said.
"Last year, I didn't take anybody out that didn't catch one or two," said charter boat captain Gary Smith.
Charter boats like Smith's noticed changes, too -- not only with what's in the water, but who's in the water. Kayakers and anglers are showing up in search of snakehead as soon as the spring into the summer as warmer weather and the season picks up.
"Some (snakehead) are in the age range of 10 to 13 years old. When they're less than a year old, snakeheads are eating other fish already, so that's why, over their lifespan, they have a potential to eat a lot of fish, and that's one reason why obviously we're concerned with them," said U.S. Fish & Wildlife biologist Josh Newhard.
Their snake-like pattern and gills capable of living days at a time -- even on land -- are a growing concern.
"They're totally hardy. They're not easy to catch. You see people out here fishing for them all day, but you know, some of them have success. They're not easy to kill. They're not easy to handle. So, if you want to catch one, you are supposed to kill it," Newhard said.
Newhard said it's now all about education. The one thing stopping this apex predator are anglers.
"We know that if recreational anglers or commercial anglers are going to get them, they have to get them at a very high level. But if we can combine our efforts, we can hopefully remove enough that we'll at least minimize any of the impacts of where they're found," Newhard said.
"We want to teach them, we just want to educate people," Kenney said.
Anglers like Kenney are on the hunt to reeling in more snakehead in the northern waters of the bay.
The state says a public-private partnership is catching and donating snakehead meat. More than 1,000 pounds of fish have been caught at the Conowingo Dam in Cecil County. The meat is donated to charities. The state says it's another way of controlling the snakehead population.

Maryland anglers say populations of the snakehead fish have ramped up with a potential to devastate the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.
