Between 1683 and 1945, economic hardship, religious persecution and political turmoil led to
five distinct waves of emigration from Germany. Germans dispersed far and wide with the majority immigrating to North America, South America and across Europe.
The largest migration period from Germany was during the second half of the 19th century. During this period, it is estimated that around 5 million Germans left their homeland and immigrated to various parts of the world. The United States was the most popular destination, with over 2.5 million Germans settling there during this period. Many Germans also immigrated to Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and Australia.
Today, the German diaspora is extensive, with communities of Germans and German descendants found throughout the world. In the United States alone, over 42 million people report having German ancestry.
