Starting in 2024, the UK will require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) from all visa-free travelers (w/ exceptions), which includes obtaining permission to visit and paying a fee before entering the country.

The ETA, for which the fee is £10 (or about US$12.50 at the current exchange rate), is electronically linked to your passport and will allow you to spend up to 180 days (six months) in the U.K. and visit any part of the country. ETAs last for two years with a valid passport.

The new cost is part of the U.K.'s forthcoming Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which will be required of all noncitizens entering the country, including U.S. travelers.

Roughly 1/5 of Sweden's population immigrated to the United States in the 18th and early 19th centuries for economic, religious, and other reasons.

Do you descend from one of these Swedish immigrants?

Between 1821 and 1930, a total of 33 million Europeans emigrated to North America. Out of these 33 million Europeans, 1.2 million were Swedish, which at the time made up about a fifth of the Swedish population. According to statistics, 1.6% of these Swedes decided to settle in Canada, and some made....

Between 1683 and 1945, economic hardship, religious persecution and political turmoil led to
five distinct waves of emigration from Germany. Germans dispersed far and wide with the majority immigrating to North America, South America and across Europe.

The largest migration period from Germany was during the second half of the 19th century. During this period, it is estimated that around 5 million Germans left their homeland and immigrated to various parts of the world. The United States was the most popular destination, with over 2.5 million Germans settling there during this period. Many Germans also immigrated to Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and Australia.

Today, the German diaspora is extensive, with communities of Germans and German descendants found throughout the world. In the United States alone, over 42 million people report having German ancestry.

Tartan Day, a day for celebrating the heritage and contributions of the Scottish diaspora to society, is held every April 6.

Primarily celebrated in North America (but growing in other countries), the date honors the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath—Scotland's own Declaration of Independence—in 1320.

Tartan Day events are taking place across North America throughout April. One celebration that may be of interest to family history enthusiasts is Tartan Day on Ellis Island.

In partnership with the Clan Currie Society, Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration will celebrate its 22nd Annual Tartan Day with an exhibition and live performances. Running April 6-24, the exhibition will trace the story of Tartan Day from its inception in Nova Scotia in 1986 to Congressional proclamations in the US. The museum will also host pipers, drummers, Highland Dancers, storytellers and more April 5-7.

Admission to the exhibit is free. For event updates, visit: https://www.facebook.com/TartanDayonEllisIsland.

To find a Tartan Day event in your area, contact a local Scottish society.
