In 1919 U.S. Citizens lost the privilege to consume alcoholic beverages when the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was established. On December 5, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt repealed prohibition and the 18th amendment, making it legal once again to distill and distribute alcohol. Today, distilleries and cideries in the Columbia River Gorge are thriving. There are currently five distilleries in the Gorge making whiskey, vodka, rum and brandy. Tasting rooms in Hood River and Stevenson offer relaxing accommodations for sitting and sipping your favorite libation. https://columbiagorgetomthood.com/distilleries-and-cideries/

Thunder Island is a small island on the Columbia River in Cascade Locks , Oregon . The island was carved out of the mainland in 1890 to build the Cascade Locks and canal which offered safe passage around the rapids for ships traveling on the Columbia River. The rapids were as loud as thunder so they called it Thunder Island. https://columbiagorgetomthood.com/west-gorge-oregon/

Sacagawea was an interpreter and guide for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s expedition westward from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Coast.

Sacagawea helped Lewis and Clark find their route to the Pacific Ocean. She then arranged an agreement with the Shoshoni tribe to borrow horses. Lewis & Clark, and Sacagawea needed more horses, so the Shoshoni gave them 29 horses. The next route they were going to take was the Columbia River which required moving their boats in addition to their horses. Going through the Columbia River would help them reach their goal to get to the Pacific Ocean. The horses pulled the boats for Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea.

Today you can find a beautiful bronze statue of Sacagawea at the Port of Cascade Locks Marine Park in Cascade Locks, Oregon. https://columbiagorgetomthood.com/2024/05/29/sacagawea/
