Eyes on…the magnificent exhibition 'Van Gogh In Auvers' in the Van Gogh Museum, in collaboration with the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Van Gogh spent the last months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he was incredibly productive, producing often more than one painting per day. He experimented with new formats, subjects and color combinations. Even though he felt inspired by the beauty of the picturesque village, and succeeded in capturing the warmth of the countryside, his mental state deteriorated. Feelings of melancholy and loneliness made him take his own life on July 29th 1890. This unique exhibition is only on view for a few more days, until September 3rd. Don't miss it!

Eyes on…Museum het Schip, icon of the Amsterdam School architecture style. Did you know that after the economic boom following the Industrial Revolution and the opening of the North Sea canal in 1876, living conditions in many Amsterdam neighbourhoods were extremely dire? By implementing the Woonwet in 1901, the city council promised to provide decent public housing for the poor and the middle class. Many housing projects were build in the imaginative expressionist Amsterdam School style. In 1919, Michel de Klerk designed the artistic building complex in which Museum het Schip houses. Here, you can visit the former post office and a model appartment dating back to the early 20th century.

Eyes on... one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, Amsterdams Hortus Botanicus from 1638. It was founded by the city council as a medicinal herb garden for doctors and apothecaries. During the 17th Century, when many exotic plants and flowers were introduced to Amsterdam soil by the ships of the VOC, botanists studied and cultivated new species in the garden. Today, you can enjoy more than 4000 plants and flowers, beautiful greenhouses and architecture from the 18th and 19th century. Above all, the lush botanical garden offers a calm, green and cool oasis in the middle of the city.

Eyes on...the recently openend 'Golden Boy Gustav Klimt' exhibition in the Van Gogh Museum, on display until the 8th of January 2023. Klimt was an unconventional Austrian artist who developed a unique style. His dreamy works, mostly captivating female figures and refined landscapes, are influenced by Jugendstil, Symbolism and the Pre-Raphaelites. Just like Van Gogh, he found solace and peace in nature. In the exhibition, his iconic works are paired with works of artists that inspired him, like Van Gogh, Toorop, Monet, Matisse, Whisler, Rodin and Toulouse-Lautrec. Immersing yourself further in the world of Klimt, can be done at the Fabrique des Lumieres at the Westergasfabriek, where you can enjoy spectaculair digital art projections.

Eyes on... one of the many gorgeous secluded courtyards in Amsterdam; the Hofje van Brienen at the Prinsengracht 89-133. Since the middle ages, many small courtyards with houses for the elderly and the poor were built. First by the Catholic Church, and later by wealthy merchants. The 18th century h**p merchant Arnaut Jan van Brienen founded this courtyard for elderly catholic couples. Today, the complex is part of Amsterdams’ social housing, and the picturesque garden that originally was intended as a bleaching ground, is accessible to the public.

Eyes on...the extravagant Parrot Tulip, that blooms in late spring (May and June). This dramatic, bi-colored flower is a real eye-catcher, and became one of the most populair tulips in the Dutch Golden Age. They have been depicted on countless paintings, and were extremely precious. The ruffled and fringed petals look like exotic parrot feathers, hence the name.

Spring is in the air! Eyes on...one of Van Goghs most beloved paintings: Almond blossom, on display in the Van Gogh museum. Did you know he painted it in 1890 as a gift to celebrate the birth of his nephew Vincent, the son of his brother Theo and his wife Jo? Blossom symbolizes the start of spring and new life. He loved the subject so much that he made a group of paintings with flowering trees. Both the subject and the composition were inspired by Japanese prints. Van Gogh had a profound love of nature, in which he found peace and solace.

Eyes on...one of Amsterdams most influential buildings of the 20th century: the Beurs van Berlage. Architect H.P. Berlage is touted as the father of Modern Architecture in the Netherlands; he introduced a more rational style instead of the overly decorative historicist style that was populair in the 19th century. The building, that opened in 1903 as a stock exchange, has a sober, brick exterior that was inspired by medieval architecture from Northern Italy. Avantgardistic sculptors and painters decorated both the exterior and the interior, making it a Gesamtkunstwerk. Nowadays, the building has a cultural function, and it houses the Tony Chocolonely chocolate factory where you can create your own chocolate bar!

Eyes on...characteristic Dutch skies on paintings from the Golden Age. This dramatic piece (De molen bij Wijk bij Duurstede) by Jacob van Ruisdael is on display in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It is one of the highlights of 17th century landscape painting, and it shows typical Dutch elements like a windmill, water, a church and a small boat. The sky, that takes up most of the canvas, is filled with ominous clouds, while a streak of sunlight shines upon the windmill. The painting seems to depict the calm before the storm; the still reflection of the boat on the water of the river Lek tells us the storm hasn't started yet.

Eyes on...the picturesque Zaan region, just north of Amsterdam. In the 18th century, this was one of the largest industrial areas in the world, with up to 600 functioning windmills cutting wood, pressing oils and grinding spices. Even the Russian Tsar Peter the Great visited the region to study the local art of shipbuilding. Travel back in time while strolling over the Zaanse Schans, a charming site with a unique cultural heritage. Here, typical Dutch skies compete with green Zaan houses, quaint shops, museums and iconic windmills for your attention.

Eyes on...possibly the best terrace in town: the Ysbreeker! The name of this iconic Grand Cafe along the Amstel river means: icebreaker, and refers to an icebreaker ship that was docked here during the 18th and 19th century. The ship was used for keeping the Amstel and Vecht river navigable, and the flow of drinking water intact during cold winter days. The building dates back to 1702, when it was an inn and a cafe. In the past, it has been a vibrant hotspot for the polical and artistic life of the city. Nowadays, the Ysbreeker is a very popular place amongst locals, who enjoy looking out over Amsterdams famous river, sipping from a cold drink underneath the linden trees.

Eyes on...the Merwede square, the Amsterdam area in which Anne Frank lived before she went into hiding. In 1933, after Hi**er became Reichskansler, the German family Frank moved from Frankfurt to Amsterdam. Until the occupation of the Netherlands by N**i Germany in May 1940, Anne and her sister Margot had a pretty happy and normal childhood. But from 1941 onwards, their lives changed completely. Jewish people were forbidden to enter general shops, restaurants, cinemas, public transportation and public schools. On July 5th, 1942 Margot received an 'Arbeidseinsatz' letter from the N**is; she had to go to a workingcamp in Germany. The family decided to go into hiding the next morning, in Otto Franks office on the Prinsengracht. After more than 2 years in hiding, the family and 4 others were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Only Otto survived the horrors of the Holocaust. This statue by sculptor Jet Schep, depicts the moment Anne leaves her home with packed bags, looking back for the last time to go into hiding.

Eyes on...the greenest neighbourhood in town! Summer in Amsterdam is very beautiful with lush vegetation abound, but the leafiest area in the historic centre is the eastern Plantage district. During the urban expansion project that started in the 1660's, the economy went down severely after disaster year 1672, and the plots of land east of the Amstel River could not be sold easily. Orchards, pleasure gardens, luscious parks, a botanical garden, elderly homes, villas, a catholic cemetery and later on the Artis Zoo were built instead of canal houses. Only after 1860, the area became urbanized while keeping it's green, quiet and spacious appearance. It became an affluent Jewish neighbourhood until the Second World War. The depicted Lau Mazirel bridge is built in the Amsterdam School style, and named after an heroic member of the Dutch Resistance.

Eyes on...the tulip, Amsterdam's iconic flower that blooms in April and May! Even though the city is famous for her tulips and the notorious Tulip Fever of the 17th Century, the flowers are not native. They originate from Central-Asia and the Western Himalayas and were cultivated in Persia from the 10th century onwards. After Turkish sultans started decorating their palace gardens with colourful tulips, Western diplomats to the Ottoman court introduced them in Europe in the 16th Century. The Dutchies fell in love with the exotic flower, that soon became a status symbol. This led to a speculation bubble, with the Semper Augustus being the most expensive tulip bulb ever, costing thousands of guilders (the price of a canal house). Luckily, things have changed; now we buy 10 tulips for only 2,50 euro!

Eyes on...the 'Amsterdam'. This impressive replica of an 18th century Dutch East Indiaman ship sailed back in town today after an extensive 7-month restauration. The original ship stranded in 1749 on a beach near Hastings during a heavy storm. It was on its first voyage to Batavia, present day Jakarta. The sailors and 28 chests of silver were saved, before the ship sank away in the mud. In the 1980s, after it was excavated, a replica was build as a work project for unemployed people. Since 1991, it can be visited as part of the National Maritime Museum.

Eyes on...the most dazzling passageway of Amsterdam, the Beurspassage! From the 15th century onwards, there has been an alley called the Baafjessteeg between the Damrak and the Nieuwendijk. After a recent renovation it has become an artwork in 2016 named the 'Amsterdam Oersoep', the 'Primordial Sea', with references to Amsterdams' canals. It tells the story of how all life emerged from the sea with it's Italian glass mosaic ceiling, chandeliers made from recycled bicycle parts and art deco ornaments on the walls. Did you know this passageway is considered the largest artwork in Amsterdam?

Eyes on...Amsterdam in wintertime! Last week we had a lot of snow and below freezing temperatures. This weekend, many canals were frozen once the city council closed the locks. The ice wasn't very strong so only a few daredevils went ice skating on the canals until some of them crashed through the ice. The last time the canals were frozen was around 3 years ago.

Eyes on...one of the most picturesque neighbourhoods of Amsterdam: the Western Islands that include Bickerseiland, Prinseneiland and Realeneiland. This quiet and charming historic district almost feels like a village in the city. In the 17th Century, the port of Amsterdam was expanded westwards, and manmade islands with factories, wharfs and warehouses were built to process and store grains, to***co, tar, herring and other goods. From the second half of the 20th Century, the derelict industrial area became a bohemian hotspot that attracted many artists and creatives. Nowadays, the area still oozes a laidback and artistic vibe, making it one of the most beloved places in town to live.
