Churchkhela is commonly seen hanging in street stalls and markets around Georgia. This curiously shaped sweet has a traditional and simple list of ingredients; grape must, flour and nuts (usually walnuts).

Tall fortifications surround Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, which forms part of one of three UNESCO world heritage sites in Georgia. Established in the 4th century CE, the current structure dates from the early 11th century. Along with stunning frescoes, the Cathedral houses a ciborium under which Jesus’ robe is said to be buried.

The Cathedral is surrounded by Mtskheta, the historic capital of Georgia and the “Holy City” of the Georgian Orthodox Church. With evidence of human settlement from the second century BCE, it is one of the oldest cities in Georgia.

Mt Ushba dwarfs the Svan towers in the Georgian village below. At 4,700 m, Mt Ushba is only the 6th tallest in Georgia, yet due to its steep profile and unpredictable weather, is considered the most difficult ascent in the Caucasus Mountains.

Joseph Stalin, one of the most significant figures of the 20th century, still holds a special, albeit controversial, place in his birth town of Gori, Georgia. Born the son of a poor cobbler, იოსებ (Ioseb) rose to lead the Soviet Union for almost 30 years. While his legacy includes the rapid development of the USSR into an industrial powerhouse, millions died in the process and in subsequent purges.

The Stalin Museum in Gori is a fascinating look at the life of this merciless dictator, presented through a decades old lens of idolisation. The Soviet era museum makes no mention of the millions who died, but presents the viewer with sufficient propaganda to begin questioning whether Stalin was actually not the tyrant that is claimed.

In front of the museum is a Greco-Italianate pavilion encasing the actual wooden house Stalin was born in 1878. Alongside is the 80 tonne, armour plated railway carriage that Stalin used to travel to various important WWII conferences.

Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, has a colourful and unique old town. Shaped by centuries of influence from surrounding empires, it is a fusion of East and West.

In Georgian, Tbilisi means ‘warm location’. It is perhaps then no surprise that the old town has many sulphuric hot spring fed baths. The most famous is Chreli Abano, with its beautiful tiled facade pictured here.

ქართული ენა, as it’s written in the beautiful Georgian alphabet, emerged in the first millennium BCE. The first surviving examples were written in the 5th century CE. Georgian is classified into a language family with no related contemporaries, meaning it’s entirely unique!

But probably the most comforting knowledge to have is that the Latin alphabet is also widely used on signs! 🙌

Kutaisi has a long and rich history, dating from the 6th century BCE. The fast flowing Rioni River, referenced in Ancient Greek texts, has its source high in the glaciers of the Caucasus Mountains.

Legend tells that the King of Iberia was on a hunting expedition when his dog fell into a hot spring. The King was so impressed by the springs that he decided to build a city at this site.
