📍📆 There’s no shortage of fantastic places to visit in the month of May. With either Summer or Winter knocking on the door (depending on your hemisphere), the accompanying crowds and extreme temperatures are yet to arrive. Here are our top destinations for May travel!👇️

🇫🇷 Paris, France
Paris in the Spring, what’s not to love? The sun is shining and flowers are in bloom. Allow time in your itinerary for enjoying the city’s many green spaces, such as the Jardin du Luxembourg. For sports fans, attending the French Open is a must!

🇦🇺 Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, NT, Australia

🇯🇵 Osaka, Japan
May is a sweet spot for visiting the neon city of Osaka - the cherry blossom crowds have cleared out, and the oppressive summer humidity is yet to set in. Take a nighttime stroll in Dotonbori, and visit the Cup Noodle Museum during the day!

🇺🇸 Bar Harbor, Maine, USA
Late Spring or ‘early Summer’ is a prime time to visit charming Bar Harbor. As the weather warms, the town’s bustling seasonal businesses reopen and more activities are available. The adjacent Acadia National Park opens many of its facilities for the season (just be sure to book your entrance pass ahead of time).

🇳🇿 Sydney, NSW, Australia
Mark your calendars for the start of , a premier festival of light, creativity, music and food. The festival runs May 24 - June 15 (2024 dates).

🇲🇹 Valletta, Malta
Take a trip to Malta’s capital before the summer crowds arrive. Valletta offers a rich culture and history, alongside sea and sun. Some great day trips include Mdina and Gozo.

🇺🇸 Arches National Park, Utah, USA

📍🇻🇦 Did you know that Vatican City is the smallest country in the world? While it might be tiny in population and land size - it’s roughly one-eighth the size of New York’s Central Park - it is certainly worthy of a place on your travel bucket list.

Here are a few other quirky facts about Vatican City:

🇮🇹 It’s completely encircled by Rome and it shares a two-mile border with Italy.

👛 It is an independent city-state with its own flag, anthem, mint (producing Euros) and stamps, and it issues its own passports and license plates.

🧮 Residents of Vatican City don’t pay taxes. The Vatican’s revenue is generated by its Museum fees, souvenir sales and other contributions.

⏳️ The huge Egyptian obelisk in St Peter’s Square dates back over 3,000 years. It arrived in its current location in 1586.

🕐️ The 350-tonne obelisk is not merely for display. It is also an enormous sundial.

🔭 The Vatican Observatory owns a research telescope that is located atop Mount Graham in Arizona in the USA.

⛪️ It is home to the world’s tallest dome. The dome of St Peter’s Basilica reaches 136.5 metres.

📍🌏 Earth Day reminds us to pause and consider the ways we can make our travel more environmentally friendly and lessen our carbon footprint. Even small, incremental shifts can add up to a huge cumulative impact. Below are some of our top tips. Share your go-to tips in the comments - we’d love to hear them!👇

✈️ Book a direct flight whenever possible. Most of the carbon emissions from flights occur during takeoff and landing.

🤿 Hands off! Be sure to not touch the marine life or step on any coral when snorkelling or scuba diving, as it can negatively impact the fragile reef ecosystem.

🧴 Look for a reef-safe sunscreen. Check for chemical ingredients that can be harmful to marine life, like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. Some beaches have even started banning use of sunscreens with these ingredients from their marine sanctuaries!

🏨 Opt out of daily housekeeping services where you stay. This reduces the excessive use of cleaning products, washing of linens and electricity for appliances like the vacuum cleaner. And when you head out for the day, remember to switch off the lights, TV and air conditioner/heater.

💧 Carry a reusable water bottle or container and refill it with filtered water on the go (or tap water - just check it’s safe to drink before taking a sip!). Bonus: with more airports and cities installing filtered water dispensers, it’s also a sneaky money saver in places where bottled water is sold at a premium.

🛍 Shop locally-made goods rather than buying something imported, as that comes with a larger carbon footprint. Plus, it’s way more fun to support local businesses and artisans!

📍🇯🇵 Photo diary from Kanazawa! Swipe 👉️
Kanazawa doesn’t typically make the cut for first-time visitors to Japan, largely because it lies on the country’s less-visited western coast. But here’s why we think you should add it to your Japan itinerary:

🏯 The Edo period history and architecture is extremely well-preserved, so the city feels steeped in tradition.
🎎 Its Geisha and Samurai districts are authentic and wonderful.
🌳 Kanazawa is home to one of the best examples of a Japanese Garden, the iconic Kenrokuen Garden. And there’s plenty of blossom trees, too!
🦞 It’s known for its exceptional seafood (you’ll find a lot of it at the Omicho Market!).
🖼️ If you’re an art lover, the city has multiple museums and celebrates both national and local handicrafts (the was a favourite!).

📍🇩🇪 Postcards from Munich! As Germany’s third-largest city, Munich is home to over 1.5 million people. This vibrant city is also considered one of the country’s cultural capitals. Here are a few fun facts about Munich:

🧭 It’s the southern-most state capital in Germany, but it is located further North than any major US city!

🏄️ You can go ‘river surfing’ on the Eisbach (Isar) River (seriously, river surfing is a big deal here!).

🍺 It’s considered the beer capital of the world and is home to many centuries-old, famous breweries (we’re looking at you, !). Prost!

📆 The city hosts the world’s largest beer festival, Oktoberfest. But, did you know that Oktoberfest actually starts in September and ends the first weekend in October? That’s because the weather is generally better in September!

🚆 The city’s underground rail system (Munich U-Bahn) was built ahead of the 1972 Olympic Games.

🇮🇹 Venice, Italy
Let’s get festive! Carnival takes over the city with vibrant parades, masquerade balls, regatta boat races and a whole lot of other fun! Despite the bright festivities, it’s still Winter, so be sure to pack plenty of layers.

🇺🇸 San Francisco, California, USA
Celebrate the Lunar New Year in the USA’s oldest and most vibrant Chinatown. The Chinese New Year Festival and Parade () is a month-long celebration, including the largest parade celebrating the Lunar New Year outside of Asia - don’t miss it!

🇺🇸 Death Valley National Park, California, USA
With sunny (but not hot) days, February is a fantastic time to visit the park before the Spring Break crowds descend on the largest national park in the lower 48.

🇨🇴 Medellin, Colombia
The temperate climate of Medellin makes it a great destination to visit most months of the year. What we love about February is that it’s on the cusp of Colombia’s ‘dry’ season - so not too many rainy days, but less tourists than January (one of the most popular months to visit). Don’t miss riding the city’s cable cars!

🇪🇸 Seville, Spain
One of the warmest cities within Europe during this time of year, Seville is a great option for a sunny getaway. Flamenco shows and tapas bar-hopping are a must!

🇦🇺 Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia
Known as Australia’s seafood frontier, the Eyre Peninsula is also exceptionally scenic. Its rugged coastline, pristine beaches and wandering wildlife make this a quintessential Aussie road trip. Skip the business of the summer holidays, and venture out in February once everyone else has returned to school and work.

🇲🇹 Valletta, Malta
While February might not be the time to visit if you’re after idyllic sunny days, it is a great time for enjoying Malta’s capital without the summer crowds. Valletta also hosts Carnival celebrations, so expect an impressive float parade, marching bands, costumes and more.

🍵 It’s home to Gion, one of the most famous Geisha districts in Japan. Be sure to book a tea ceremony in advance!

🚆 Kyoto makes for a great hub to visit other cities since it’s super well connected by rail, in particular. Okasa, Nara and Himeji are just three of the easily accessible cities you can visit as day trips from Kyoto. (Also, shout out to Kyoto Station for being worthy of a visit in its own right! Fantastic architecture, retail, food and exhibits!)

🏮 Kyoto hosts countless festivals and parades throughout the year, including the renowned Gion Matsuri (Gion Festival) in July.

🍣 Kyoto is a food hotspot! Local delicacies are on show at Nishiki Market - Kyoto’s largest fresh food hub. Sample Kyoto-style ramen, sushi, tofu and other local favourites, such as pickles!
