This weekend, we celebrate Mother’s Day – a time to appreciate the countless contributions of those who have “mothered” and uplifted us with their strength and selfless love.

Mothers and mother figures are on the frontlines of our “new normal” – adapting to a world changed by a two-year pandemic and gently guiding their loved ones along the way. Each day, they empower and inspire those around them – standing firm in the face of the unknown. Please join me in celebrating all they do that so often goes unnoticed.

Though this is a happy time for many, I am always thinking of loved ones no longer with us. To those of you who are honoring the memory of your mothers or celebrating mother figures; for the one who longs to be a mother; for the mother who has lost a child: We see you, and you are not forgotten this Mother’s Day.

Recently, I have been reflecting on Amanda Gorman’s words: “There is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we are
brave enough to be it.” To all of our VL Family Travels moms and mom-like figures – thank you for being the light. And thank you for choosing to be brave.

June is Pride Month in honor of the 1969 Stonewall Riots that served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. We stand with the Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Q***r (LGBTQ+) community in celebrating Pride

Part of that celebration is taking time to recognize all intersections within the LGBTQ+ community and honoring LGBTQ+ people of color - whose activism inspired the very first Pride and different gender identities. Celebrating our unique differences and encouraging diverse viewpoints creates an inclusive culture and is how we continue to grow as individuals and as a company.🌈

When Will Borders Open?

Countries That May Open in 2021: Canada, Chile

The U.S./Canadian border is the longest international border in the world and it has remained closed to non-essential travel ever since March 2020. The border closure seems to get extended on a monthly basis and will likely continue through mid-2021 at the very least. Like the U.S., Canada’s vaccination campaign is looking promising and Prime Minister Trudeau has said that all Canadians who want a vaccine should be able to get one by the end of September, or earlier. However, Canada is currently facing a major COVID-19 surge, with new lockdown measures in place. The situation in Canada is so bad that the CDC recently placed it on a Level 4 advisory, warning against all travel to Canada (even for vaccinated travelers).

Europe: Albania, Croatia, Georgia, Greece (May 14), Iceland, Turkey

Only a few European countries are currently open for tourism. Croatia had opened last summer, then closed again, and reopened as of April 1st. In March, both Greece and Iceland announced plans to reopen. As of April 6th, vaccinated travelers can visit Iceland, and Greece plans to open its borders to travel on May 14th. To enter Greece, you’ll either need proof of vaccination, antibodies, or a negative Covid-19 test. Albania, Croatia, Georgia, and Turkey are allowing travelers with a vaccination record and/or testing requirements. (Note that Georgia is only allowing in visitors who arrive via air.)

Countries Open for Tourists: Several, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and more.

Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic are the least restrictive in this group. These countries opened their borders to travelers in 2020 and do not currently require testing for entry, though the CDC always recommends testing before travel and it is a requirement upon returning to the U.S.

Amsterdam Wants to Ban W**d for Tourists
It’s one way the city hopes to reduce overtourism.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema hopes it’ll stay this way: On January 8, she called for a ban on foreigners buying cannabis at the city’s famed coffee shops once the destination reopens to international travelers. (The city is under lockdown until at least February 9.) As in several Dutch cities including Maastricht, a “residence criterion” would limit sales to Dutch residents and nationals.

It’s part of a wider mission to redress the imbalance between visitors and locals, with Halsema citing a government survey suggesting that for 57 percent of tourists aged 18 to 35, coffee shops were a “very important reason” for choosing the Dutch capital as a destination. Under Halsema’s plans, Amsterdam’s 166 coffee shops—almost 30 percent of the total in the Netherlands—would be winnowed to 68, a number the survey cited as sufficient to cater to local demand.

The idea is to get away from visitors that have only one focus: coming through the Red Light District, getting stoned or drunk and causing a nuisance,” says Geerte Udo, director of the city-marketing agency Amsterdam & Partners. “In the last five years we’ve seen the old city-center becoming a monoculture. Residents don’t feel it’s theirs anymore, which isn’t healthy for the visitor economy either.”

As part of a larger vision for what the city wants to accomplish by 2025, the agency instead invokes “valuable visitors.”

Dear traveler,

Are you considering an international trip? If so, read on. The CDC has issued a COVID-19 order that may impact your plans for re-entering the United States.
Effective January 26, 2021 travelers arriving in the U.S. must:

1) Get tested for COVID-19 no more than 3 days before departing to the United States and show a negative test result to the airline before boarding OR 2) show documentation of recent recovery from COVID-19 to the airline before boarding.

This new order applies to all air passengers — including U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents — aged 2 years and older. It also applies regardless of the length of time spent outside of the United States.

Acceptable documentation of recovery from COVID-19 includes both a positive viral test result within 3 months of travel (or the time period specified in current CDC guidance) AND a letter from a healthcare provider or public health official stating that the passenger is cleared to end isolation
