It’s the 1800s version of “I liked that band before they were cool…” 😎 You will see this all the time in museums now if you look! Another sneaky trick is to do the engraving in a different style or font just to make it VERY clear they bought the painting while the artist was still alive. You’ll notice that the plaque says “friends of the museum” which is what a lot of non-profits have to do in order to guide gifts toward an intended purpose. For example, maybe someone wanted to donate money to purchase new paintings—and they didn’t want their contribution to just go to the electric bill that year—they could make their donation to the friends of the museum, which might be only dedicated to buying paintings. 🖼️ Specifically this painting can be seen in the national museum in Oslo, which opened in 2022 is photography-friendly, children-friendly, and all-around an excellent museum. I don’t think anyone is arguing that this is one of Monet’s best paintings, but how cool is it that he got money for it while he was still alive?! 💰Voiceover by my favorite history professor who pointed out the plaque as we were walking past, my husband Dantan Wernecke. 🥰
