Nyungwe Forest (/nj-ʌŋ-ɡwɛ/) is located in southwestern Rwanda, on the border with Burundi, where it is contiguous with the Kibira National Parkto the south, and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The Nyungwe rainforest is probably the best preserved montane rainforest in Central Africa. It is located in the watershed between the basin of the river Congo to the west and the basin of the river Nile to the east. From the east side of the Nyungwe forest comes also one of the branches of the Nile sources.

Kisiizi Waterfalls lie on Kyabamba River a few meters from Kisiizi Hospital in Rukungiri district which borders with Kabale in Western Uganda. The waterfalls are approximately 30 meters high on the Rushoma River that pours its water into Lake Edward.

Historically Kisiizi falls was a tragic place where unmarried pregnant Bakiga girls were punished to death. This practice was discontinued and what had been a place of despair became a place of hope and healing as the Church of Uganda established Kisiizi Hospital in 1958.

Kisiizi valley was also used by the British as a site for a flax processing factory in 1944, built to produce linen cords for parachutes used in the Second World War. Italian prisoners of war that had been captured in Abyssinia were brought to Kisiizi to provide labour.

Geographically, the falls are located in a forested area and gorge famous for bird life including endemic species like the Ross Turaco, Double Toothed barbet and the cinnamon Bee eater. As a tourist area, it is famed for the scenic environment and trekking activities.

Mount Nyiragongo erupted for the first time in nearly two decades Saturday, turning the night sky a fiery red and sending lava onto a major highway as panicked residents tried to flee Goma, a city of nearly 2 million.

There was no immediate word on any casualties, but witnesses said that lava already had engulfed a highway that connects Goma with the city of Beni in North Kivu province.

Mount Nyiragongo’s last eruption, in 2002, left hundreds dead and coated airport runways in lava. More than 100,000 people were left homeless in the aftermath, adding to the fear in Goma on Saturday night.

Kapchorwa is the gateway to some astonishing natural beauty, stretching from Kapchorwa Town, via Kween and Bukwo District, to Suam at the border with Kenya. The number of tourists who visited this area can be counted on one hand. In August 2020 I explored the remote Benet Community, home to the authentic Ndorobos people. This Community is home to an abundance of beautiful trails, waterfalls and caves and to an authentic lifestyle. Especially in organic farming we can learn a lot from the Ndorobos. Around the home stay of local guide David you can learn how to make honey, pound millet or drink milk directly from the cow!

NB: The Ndorobos people and Community can be visited via a one day’s hike starting from Bugema close to the Kapchorwa – Suam highway. This highway is currently under construction so within a few years more visitors are expected here.

Report 2020/2021 indicates that Rhinos in all national parks became extinct because of poaching for their horns and encroachment of their habitats. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was however setup by the Rhino Fund and the Uganda wildlife Authority, so as to protect the Rhinos, Breed them and eventually reintroduced them to the national parks where they once existed. The Ziwa Rhino sanctuary allows visitors to do Rhino tracking at the sanctuary @ a small fee. Here are the rates for the Ziwa Rhino this year.

Abite pricey for Uganda, this hotel is well worth the money. The terrace and gardens are beautiful with amazing views and even power points at the seating areas!! Breakfast is lovely with ability to order eggs etc a la cartel and even just get a plate of fruit sent to the room. Either balcony’s and views this was on option I chose a few times. Rooms with balcony of lake view are well fitted out, shower is hit with good pressure. Everything is clean and well maintained.

Six lions were last evening found dead at Ishasha sector, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kanungu district in what’s believed to be suspected poisoning, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) said.

According to UWA, the lion carcasses were found with most of their parts missing. Eight dead vultures were also found at the scene, which points to possible poisoning.

Mr Bashir Hangi, the UWA communications manager said Saturday that a team of investigators was sent to the ground to handle the matter in collaboration with police in Kanungu District.

“Given that some body parts of the lions are missing, we cannot rule out illegal wildlife trafficking,” he said.

Mr Hangi said the deaths has dire negative impact on the tourism sector and revenue generation in the country.

“UWA condemns the illegal killing of wildlife because it does not only impact negatively on our tourism as a country, but also revenue generation which supports conservation and community work in our protected areas,” Mr Hangi said in a statement

According to UWA, tourism has been a top foreign exchange earner to the country contributing almost 10 percent of the GDP and 23 percent of the total foreign exports.

He assured the public that UWA shall continue to strengthen the protection of lions and other wildlife in Uganda and will pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.

“Our national parks remain safe and attractive to visitors and we still have lions in Queen Elizabeth and other parks,” he said.
