16-17 Feb 2019: How do you transfer a whole lotta luggage from Cairo to Luxor? Hire a private coach for a midnight pickup at the Cairo hotel for the 9+ hour transfer, thus allowing the group to fly "light" the next day and avoid time-consuming check-in, excess baggage fees, and baggage claim delays.

16 Feb 19: Giza with all the bells and whistles: A visit to the Lost City of the pyramid builders with Dr. Mark Lehner, renowned American archaeologist. A hard-hat tour of the soon-to-open Grand Egyptian Museum, the world’s largest archaeology museum, where a colossal Ramesses statue dominates the entrance. A rarely permitted tour of GEM’s Conservation Center (one of our Egyptian guides nearly came to blows with the authorities, who did not get the memo about our visit), where we saw King Tutankhamun’s gilded chariots and three funeral beds adorned with the heads of leopards, hippos and the cow goddess, along with jewelry and other artifacts (an ancient loincloth elicited particular awe). Private visits inside the Cheops, or Great, Pyramid, and at the Great Sphinx – incredible to see without the tourist hoards. Then a private lunch in a Bedouin tent overlooking the Pyramids with a live band, camels and horses to ride and a spectacular view of the Giza plateau. Last but not least, an after-dinner trunk show of sinfully hedonistic Nakhla jewelry, whose contemporary designs are inspired by Egypt’s storied history from the Pharaonic, Greco Roman and Islamic civilizations.

15 Feb 19: Inside the 4,400 year old Tomb of Wahtye, discovered in Dec 2018, never looted, and remarkable for its dozens of statues and colorful drawings of high priest Wahtye and his family: seated opposite his wife at a offering table stacked with flat breads, listening to music, sailing on the Nile, and directing workers to carry out everyday tasks.

LOOKING BACK A YEAR AGO:
Two rock star women Egyptologists. A caravan of devoted fans. Twelve days in the desert in February 2019.

15 Feb 19, Necropolis of Saqqara: We were the first group to have access to the newly discovered Tomb of Wahtye (fl. 25th-century BC), a high-ranking priest and official who served under King Neferirkare Kakai during the Fifth Dynasty of Egypt.
