On 31st of August 2021, Quarter Mediation organised in Assen, The Netherlands, the 3rd Multiplier event for the Cities by Heart project. The 14 participants got in contact with the project, its activities and results and were given the opportunity to watch the Documentary film Cities by heart produced by Quarter Mediation during the project. Moreover, they were given a taste of the activity the video was based on, by being invited to an outdoor treasure hunting in Assen. The participants found the project results very useful and consider that the project activities enforce the learning process, as well as the development of team work, entrepreneurial and social skills through experiential learning. Moreover, they highlighted the fact that, by organising activities outdoor, people get to know their town better, but they also get to know each other better.

CITIES BY HEART is approaching its final phase: Training and employability opportunities for migrants in the tourism sector

June 25, 2021

The Partnership took part in the Closing Meeting of CITIES BY HEART, a unique journey in the heart of cities, an Erasmus+ Project of the European Commission which brings together six Partners from six countries, i.e. Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
The objective of the project is twofold: to create a link between the residents of these urban areas to avoid communal conflicts and to trigger an economic dynamic to respond to the precariousness of the inhabitants of disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

CITIES BY HEART embraces ambitious goals of social inclusion through the very concept and design of its training offer.
It includes a first phase of training "peers": socio-educational facilitators, actors of multicultural and disadvantaged territories, heads of social centers or associations. Then, in a second phase, it includes a transfer of skills to young underprivileged European citizens who also have a personal background in relation to immigration and encounter problems of integration into the labour market.

Throughout the previous months, Partners selected and trained a small cohort of adult migrants (i.e. seniors) willing to experience a new training opportunity as tourist guide.

Seniors accompanied a selected group of “Visitors” around urban areas of touristic relevance as if they were experiencing the city with their own eyes and memories. Visitors were selected based on specific profiles as identified by Partners during proposal.

Each Visitor’s profile was unique in its own way so as to enlarge as much as possible the range of cultural and social backgrounds tackled by the project:

• Slow traveller: a curious traveller who wants to get off the beaten path
• Green traveller: a local who wishes to learn more about his/her own city
• Neighbour: a person who shares the same migratory background of project’s targets
• Academic: a person with an academic background in urban diversity and intercultural communication
• Innovator: a tourism professional curious to see how the project plays out

With the help of Partners, Seniors proceeded to transfer their knowledge to another selected group of young migrants (i.e. Juniors) in charge of replicating the experience after developing a tourist itinerary on their own.

During the meeting, Partners exchanged considerations on what achieved so far, impacts and tangible results, further ways to sustain the uptake and validation of the project.
Before the conclusion of the project, Partners will engage Juniors even further as targets of individual and face-to-face coaching sessions to better train them on job-hunting and skills for employability.

CITIES BY HEART is close to its next implementation phase!

In the previous months, partners mapped and finalised urban routes and excursions programmes that are now ready to be delivered to targets, with the aim to empower their knowledge of transversal skills (highly relevant for tourism occupations).

The last virtual meeting represented an opportunity to discuss about the many ways in which partners will be able to deliver the training and manage participants’ expectations.

Updates will follow soon...

As a result of the involvement in the Erasmus +. KA2 Strategic partnership project "Cities by heart", Quarter Mediation created two online tourist routes in two different cities in the Netherlands.
The route “History steps in Groningen” is a virtual history quest in the city centre of Groningen. The online route highlights the most important architectural sites that told the story of the city for local population, as well as for international tourists. Groningen is the capital of the province with the same name, located in the north of The Netherlands. The city of Groningen is nationally known as the "Metropolis of the North”, being regarded as the main urban centre of the northern part of the country, particularly in the fields of education, business, music and other arts. Groningen is also known as the "World Cycling City", around 57% of its residents using a bicycle for regular commute within the city.
Try out the route on Routey https://www.routey.net/groningen/route/history-steps-in-groningen to learn more about Groningen in a funny and engaging way.

As a result of the involvement in the Erasmus +. KA2 Strategic partnership project "Cities by heart", Quarter Mediation created two online tourist routes in two different cities in the Netherlands.
The route "Discover Assen" is a virtual walking quest that highlights in a virtual way the most important places to be visited by locals and tourists from all over the world, to learn in a fun and relaxing way about the history and stories of the city of Assen, the capital of the province of Drenthe, one of the 12th provinces of The Netherlands. The city of Assen is a very important part of the history of The Netherlands, due to the fact that it is connected with the first king of The Netherlands, Louis Napoleon (NL: Lodewijk Napoleon) who awarded Assen its city rights in March 1809. Exhibitions, festivals, sport and culture events organised in Assen all over the year are highly appreciated both by locals and by international tourists. Things are moving forward!
On 24 February 2021, CITIES BY HEART partners met online to take stock of the state of implementation of project activities and results. While most of the attention is now devoted to O5, partners also discussed adjustments to the schedule and to the objectives to account for the exceptional circumstances brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as ways to boost the project’s dissemination activities.

CITIES BY HEART is a Project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission that involves a Consortium of 6 Partners from 6 countries (Austria, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Portugal).

The goal of CITIES BY HEART Project is to promote a type of responsible tourism “at zero kilometre” in which protagonists are citizens with a family or individual migratory path (whether new entrants or settled in the neighbourhood for several generations) original they want to share. The objective is twofold: to create a link between the residents of these urban areas to avoid communal conflicts and to trigger an economic dynamic to respond to the precariousness of the inhabitants of disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

In line with the fifth article of The Global Code of Ethics for Tourism adopted in 1999 by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization - “Tourism, a beneficial activity for host countries and communities” - it is worth mentioning the city of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe and the second largest in the world. Rotterdam is the second largest city and municipality in The Netherlands and is home to over 180 nationalities. The fact that the city centre was rebuilt after the World War II has as a consequence a varied architectural landscape that includes skyscrapers, but also village-like quartiers (e.g. the Cube Houses part of the Blaakse Bos, designed as a village within the city where one can imagine the houses as trees and the whole area as a wood.).
The city has more to offer including the city’s ‘Axis of Art, the ultimate arts and culture street de Witte de Withstraat known for its artistic, multicultural and lively character and lined with galleries, avantgarde fashion boutiques, restaurants and art cafes.

In line with the fourth article of The Global Code of Ethics for Tourism adopted in 1999 by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization - “Tourism, a user of the cultural heritage of mankind and contributor to its enhancement” – a visit to Assen, the capital of the province of Drenthe (one of the 12th provinces of The Netherlands) is a must.
While in Assen, people can visit the Drents Museum, an art and history museum opened since 1854. It has a collection of prehistorical artifacts, applied art and visual art. The museum also has temporary exhibitions hosted in the new underground wing. The permanent exhibition is famous for some unique artifacts such as bog bodies, finds from the Funnelbeaker culture and the oldest recovered canoe in the world that dates between 8200 and 7600 BC. Moreover, the Drents Museum hosts The Biggest Dollhouse in The Netherlands (NL: Het Grootste Poppenhuis van Nederland).
