HOW HURRICANES DO PROVIDE SOME BENEFITS IN NATURE

Hurricanes really are - the good, the bad and the ugly of our severe weather events. Although most people only see the bad and the ugly, much good does come from hurricanes.

As hurricanes make landfall, their wind blows spores and seeds further inland from where they would normally fall; this effect can be seen miles inland as storms move away from the shoreline. These seeds can replenish lost growth and the hurricane-driven redistribution of organic matter in soils provides the nutrients needed for forests to bounce back from severe storm impacts. The fresh nutrients and sediment distributed by hurricanes spawn growth spurts in new plant life, which can later lead to upticks in animal life.

NEW PASS IN THE STATE PRESERVE – NORTH CAPTIVA ISLAND

We often look at the destruction that comes along with hurricanes and tropical storms – and for good reason – but there are also benefits that come along with these storms as well.

Hurricane Milton not only deposited unprecedented amounts of new sand on the beaches of North Captiva Island it also created a new pass in the State Preserve.

The new pass is sure to be a great spot for Shelling, finding Sand Dollars or just being - “Knee deep in the water somewhere - Got the blue sky breeze and it don't seem fair - Only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair……..”

ELECTRIC SERVICE ON NORTH CAPTIVA ISLAND

Following Hurricane Milton - Electric Service has been fully restored to North Captiva Island.

With no visible power poles on the island we are often asked, where does the electric service that powers North Captiva come from?

Commercial electric service was first established on North Captiva Island in 1983 and is provided by Lee County Electric Cooperative – LCEC.

The island's electricity leaves the mainland in Cape Coral, travels to Pine Island, then flows through wires strung on poles over the water to a Sub-Station on Sanibel, then travels to a Sub-Station on Captiva. From Captiva the electricity travels trough a buried cable under the water of Pine Island Sound to North Captiva.

With such a challenging infrastructure needed to provide electric service to North Captiva, service can be interrupted by wind from hurricanes and tornadoes as well as lightning.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the linemen for their relentless efforts in restoring power to North Captiva Island. THANK YOU!!

National Geodetic Survey damage assessment imagery

NOAA's aerial imagery captures damage to coastal areas caused by a storm and aids safe navigation. Aerial imagery is a crucial tool to determine the extent of the damage inflicted by flooding, and to compare baseline coastal areas to assess the damage to major ports and waterways, coastlines, critical infrastructure, and coastal communities - including North Captiva Island.

ISIAND UPDATE – 10/12

The storm pushed a lot of water onto the island.

Crews are currently pumping water from the low-lying areas - this will obviously take some time.

After the water is off the roads, crews will start re-grading the roads so travel around the island can get back to normal - this is expected to take around 2 weeks.

On a brighter note – The following picture of the beach by North Captiva Pearl was taken today and the picture of the Pink Flamingos on the beach was taken yesterday. Both are reminders of how special North Captiva Island is and what drives the residents to keep pushing forward and prevail.

UPPER CAPTIVA FIRE & RESCUE

Today, the Upper Captiva Fire & Rescue District headed back to North Captiva Island to restart normal operations.
