New Years only comes around once a year, and the best place to send off the old and ring in the new is on a beach in Rio 🇧🇷. You can celebrate with 2 million of your best friends and celebrate new beginnings with an incredible fireworks show.

There is a stark if incredible beauty found where the glacial lakes of the Patagonian Andes meet the cold desert. The wind howls and the temperature is cold even in the height of summer- but to wander and explore one of Earth's last frontiers is worth it.

Ruta 40 is an incredible road along the front range of the Argentinian Andes, traveling along any section of it will make for an incredible road trip.

Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.

Italy: €1 houses in Sicily, Sardinia etc

Bursting with culture, delicious food, and glorious weather, it’s easy to wonder why there are so many areas in Italy using the charm offensive to get digital nomads to move there..
Central to this is the recent property trend where towns across the country sell off €1 homes. The goal is to draw creative minds with a bit of cash to spare to rejuvenate beautiful, albeit dilapidated, homes back to their former glory.

Make sure you’re in it for the right reasons rather than a cheap investment – there are often agreements that you invest in renovations or face a fine from the local authorities.
Regions in the country involved in these schemes include:
* Sicily
* Sardinia
* Abruzzo
* Milano

Italy: Villages in Apulia, Abruzzo, and Calabria

If home renovation isn’t your thing, there are many locations that don’t require that level of time and investment. Places that, like the rest of this list, would rather pay you instead.
Take Candela, for instance. Set within Italy’s gorgeous Apulia region, the medieval village earned itself the nickname ‘Little Naples’ for its beauty and easy-going way of life.

You can receive €800, €1,200, or €2,000 euros depending on whether you’re a lone traveller, in a couple, or a family. All you need is an annual salary above €7,500 and an application for formal residency.

Elsewhere, there’s Santo Stefano di Sessanio in the Abruzzo region, not too far from Rome.
The cobbled town has recently started to offer grants of up to €44,000 to incentivise new residents aged 18-40 to live there, with the expectation that you will open a business throughout your stay.

Finally, Calabria is the most recent addition to Italy’s offerings. The region forms the ‘toe’ of the Italian boot shape and consists of several villages that have seen huge declines in populations. Some have been left with fewer than 2000 residents in recent years even though there is the infrastructure to accommodate many more.

Applicants must be under 40 to apply, but would be entitled to €1,000-€8000 a year for two to three years. Potential earnings of €24,000 to live on the Italian coast?

The glacial tongues of the South Patagonian Ice Sheets are some of the biggest glaciers in the world. These giant rivers of ice stade as high as apartment buildings and crumble in thundering ruptures into azure lakes.

This glacier is one of the few in the world that is growing, though no one knows why.

I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t even reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.

Spain: tiny towns in Galicia and Asturias

The town of Ponga, Asturias is granting families €3,000 to help them settle in, plus an additional €3,000 for each new baby born in the area. It is adorned with intricate rural churches displaying art dating back to the 17th century and has a population of less than 600 people.

Another is Rubiá, tucked away in the mountains of Galicia. If the gorgeous views of the Iberian peninsula aren’t enough to draw you in, the local township supplementing your income with an extra €100-150 per month might be.

Once a thriving port where gold was shipped from the Brazilian interior to Portugal, Paraty is now a gorgeous town saved from the ravages of time, and preserved for modern day people. The streets and beautiful old buildings take you back to an era long ago.

If you’re there, hop a bus or taxi to nearby Trindade beach, it's a short trip and the beautiful wide beach dotted with bars and restaurants is worth the ride.

If you’ve considered living and working abroad, chances are you have looked into the possibility of either doing it as a digital nomad or pursuing a more traditional expat lifestyle.

As a digital nomad, you would be switching between various locations across the world, and working while you travel.

In contrast, the expat lifestyle usually involves digging your heels into a new fixed location to work and call home, instead of working on the fly.

[Living costs compared]

Digital nomads might agree that they spend a little more than their expat equivalents. Think planes, trains, and automobiles. Think about rent, and you’ll be on your way to understanding some of the costs involved with continually travelling. Many digital nomads counteract the cost of living by visiting countries where the economic position is a little more forgiving.

Expats and digital nomads alike need to spend on food, accommodation, and travel, so it can be particularly tricky to average the cost and say which option comes out on top.

[Are you a digital nomad or an expat?]

An expat lifestyle is for you if:
- You like the concept of moving abroad.
- You are content spending prolonged periods in one location.
- You want a greater level of stability in your career.

You’re more suited as a digital nomad if:
- You want to travel the world.
- You are happy working 100% remotely.
- A social life is lower on your priority list.

Life might be difficult for a while, but I would tough it out because living in a foreign country is one of those things that everyone should try at least once. My understanding was that it completed a person, sanding down the rough provincial edges and transforming you into a citizen of the world.
