Happy Juneteenth!
Today commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States. In 2021, Juneteenth was finally recognized as a Federal Holiday thanks to the grandmother of Juneteenth, Opal Lee. At 97 years old she walked 1,400 miles to gather signatures to move Congress. Her efforts cemented the day's significance in U.S History. Thank Opal Lee

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, began to honor Union troops from the Civil War and became a national holiday in 1971. Waterloo, New York, is officially recognized as the holiday's birthplace, first celebrating on May 5, 1866.

A crucial part of Memorial Day history involves the Black community. Historian David W. Blight uncovered this in 1996. On May 1, 1865, in Charleston, SC, freed Black slaves and white missionaries organized one of the earliest Memorial Day celebrations. They buried 250 Union soldiers who died in a Confederate prison, naming the site "Martyrs of the Race Course."

During the last months of the war, the Confederate Army used the Washington Racecourse as an open-air prison where 260 Union soldiers died from disease and exposure, buried in a mass grave. The Black community re-interred the bodies, building a whitewashed fence around the cemetery.

Nearly 10,000 people, mostly Black, gathered to honor the fallen with songs, speeches, and a parade led by Black Union regiments. They also held a significant burial ceremony at Fort Sumter, attended by about 3,000 people, including dignitaries.

Blight's 2001 book, "Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory," highlighted these efforts, ensuring the pivotal role of the Black community in shaping Memorial Day is remembered and honored. Thank you to all who have served and sacrificed.
