Christmas walk #5

Burton upon Trent offers vast and spectacular urban green spaces, that are free for all to enjoy...

Stapenhill Hollows provides a short riverside walk opportunity for the younger members of the family. Scattered along the paths of The Hollows you will find five wonderful wooden sculptures, along with five rubbing posts to keep the littles ones interested and walking. So don't forget you crayons and paper!

Burton Mail Centenary Woodlands is a easy, short walk and is part of the larger Woodlands and Washlands Circuit. The urban woodland has been created with surfaced and mown pathways throughout the area of the woodland. There are five wooden animal sculptures scattered along the pathways, for children to find along the way.

These wonderful green spaces are located on a natural floodplain and as such are not accessible at all times. All are within walking distance of the town of Burton upon Trent, where you will find a vast range of places for a drink or something to eat.

Christmas walk #4

The joyous Jackson's Bank...

This 35ha woodland is an easy woodland circular walk, is located in the village of Hoar Cross. Part of The National Forest and part of the Duchy of Lancaster’s Needwood Estate this stunning ancient woodland is a delightful place for a short walk all year round.

This 2 mile easy walk is perfect for little ones and babies in carriers and great for a quick outdoor adventure. If you keep a steady pace it should take you around 60 minutes. Use the free Treefest route planner on the Go Jauntly app to plan your route.

There are several places for refreshments in the area, including, The Meynell Ingram Arms, The Deer Park, Hoar cross Hall and The Old Bakers Cottage Tearooms in Newborough. All just a short drive away.

Christmas walk #3

Today's featured walk is Bramshall Road Park...

You don't have to go out into the countryside to enjoy the great outdoor spaces we have in East Staffordshire!

This coveted Green Flag park, is located on the western edge of Uttoxeter, which contains features such as Picknall Brook where you expect to see kingfishers darting backwards and forwards, wild flowers and areas of woodland planting.

The linear nature of the park has a flat path network providing a reasonably long but leisurely walks, along with other facilities such as a bowls green, skate park, play park and outdoor gym.

If you are in need of some refreshments after your wonderful walk, you will find a vast selection of eateries in the town centre, such as Time, The Vintage Hub and The Vintage Tearooms.

Christmas walk #2

Today's featured walk is Ellastone & the Weavers Walks. Ellastone is just 7 miles north of Uttoxeter.

These walks vary between 2.5 and 7.5 miles depending on the route you choose.

The Calwich Abbey Route is 2.5 miles long. This gentle 1hr 30 mins walk is a gentle stroll with few gradients, and is the ideal introduction to the landscape surrounding Ellastone. This walk features the charming countryside, interesting flora and fauna, Ellastone’s historic church and the ruins of Calwich Hall.

Walk #1 is Branston Water Park Nature Reserve, near Burton upon Trent.

An easy 60 minute circular walk. A flat footpath runs around the perimeter of the lake, making it ideal for families with strollers.

The path meanders through woodland, wetland and the wildflower meadow (at the right time of year), with plenty of viewing platforms and picnic benches to watch the diverse and wonderful wildlife close up. Information boards around the lake describe the variety of wildlife, birds and their habitats that can be found residing in this urban nature reserve and great for a game of I spy.

The onsite Hub Café is a great place to pick up a coffee, will they children play on the small play area.

😍 Another must-see shop at Woodmill Farm is ‘Scrummys at the Barn’, run by Husband and Wife team Jane and Stuart Scrimshaw.

🥃 After many years as a Publican, Jane took the decision to move into retail and open the shop in February 2021. Scrummys proudly supports many small independent distillers, producers and crafters, and sells a large range of local beer, cider, gin, rum and wine.

🍾 Alongside these offerings, you will find a vast array of handmade works by local crafters, metalworkers, woodworkers, illustrators, ceramicists, potters and jewellers, which make ideal gifts on the run-up to the festive season. One example is a range of candles that are produced by a 12-year old boy, alongside his Grandad and mum. A real entrepreneur!

🥂 One of Scrummys best-sellers is Yoxall Ice, a dessert cider that has been distilled for two years to mature, before bottling. 40% of the apples in the drink are taken from apples in the area, so you cant get much more local than that! The same producers also craft a Yoxall cider that comes in standard, medium and dry, as well as a perry version.

In order to thank their customers for shopping local, Jane will be offering 10% off wine to celebrate Small Business Saturday on 2nd December. So it's a must visit for today!

👀 Also situated at Woodmill Farm, Yoxall is the fab-u-lous Green Door Bakery!

🍰 Owner Trish McCann, from Yoxall, opened the doors to the retail business during lockdown, as their outside catering business of 20 years came to a temporary halt.

🥖 The very popular family run bakery and patisserie, in rural Yoxall offer a vast array of handmade artisan breads, a huge selection of cakes (gluten free options are available) and delicious deserts, but you can also pick up handmade sandwiches and takeaway drinks and much more.

🥪 Every single item is handmade in Yoxall, using the best quality ingredients: from the jam to the cakes and bread. You really must try the sourdough and Tish's mum's 'Mary's Pancakes', a secret recipe that have been popular since the day Green Door opened its doors.

🍞 Green Door have a zero waste policy, with left over croissants used to make bread and butter pudding, left over bread made into breadcrumbs for use in their treacle tarts with anything left over after that offered to customers in their 'zero waste bags'. Showing that all business big and small can make an impact!

🏆 Today is Small Business Saturday and we will be showcasing the wonderful independent stores at Woodmill Farm, Yoxall...

🥩 Paul Shum Family Butchers on Woodmill Farm, nestled in the heart of Yoxall specialise in local meats and prefer their meat to come from within a small radius. Their ethos is ‘Fresh and Local’ and all their lamb, beef and pork is sourced within a fifteen mile radius of the shop.

🥧 The award winning butchers also sell local cheeses, a vast range of fresh veg and an array of artisan foods. They also make all their own pies, using Chris's grandma's special recipe. She obviously doing something right as they sell almost 200 pies a week!

🐄 The friendly butchers was established in 2018, and is located on Woodmill Farm, with several other independent stores...more on the others to follow.
