Had at delicious little snack at Nagoya JR station. They have these mount blanc cakes at DOCOUR, a cafe chain that's all around Japan. The crust on the bottom is just meringue.

GUJO HACHIMAN PART 4

I did a lot of shopping out of combinis and grocery stores that were around my hotel (about 5 min outside of town- we drove). I ate a lot of salmon onigiris and yogurt. If it's salmon onigiri you want, try to get to the combini early in the day because they sell out fast. The boiled eggs in Japan are also surprisingly good! Much better than American boiled eggs.

Be careful asking google for yakitori places. The night we got there I googled yakitori and it led us to someone's house. I had better luck finding legit restaurants just walking around the town, which is an easy walk, its a small beautiful town and doesn't take much energy to walk through it.

I fully plan on coming back to Gujo Hachiman someday. And when I do, I'll try more restaurants and collect as much data as I possibly can! Such a beautiful place shouldn't be closed off to celiacs.

The town mascot, GJ8 Man. Isn't he so cute?? My favorite souvenir.

GUJO HACHIMAN PART 3

In the end I was able to find a restaurant to eat at, a pizza place called Pizzeria Colombaccio.

They didn't have anything specifically made for gluten free people, but they had a good looking salad which I ordered. It was seasoned with oil and vinegar dressing mixed with a bit of oregano, and I didn't have a reaction to it.

It was very fresh, high quality and delicious. The rest of my families meals also came with smaller salads, and a rice cracker, which I ate.

Communication was hard in this town, nobody spoke English and the only Japanese we were able to convey was through google translate. Apparently the salad that I ordered was part of a salad and spaghetti combo, and you can't get it without the spaghetti. So I gave the spaghetti to my gluten eating daughter.

GUJO HACHIMAN PART 2

While walking around the town I noticed several restaurants that could potentially be good options. I saw some yakitori and yakinuku restaurants where asking for no seasoning would possibly be doable. Unfortunately, we apparently came to this town during a holiday, and because of this all of these restaurants were closed.

I also saw a couple places that served kakigori. One of the restaurants was closed and the other one said they only serve kakigori during the summer.

It looked like the ingredients were just ice, cream and fruit.

Coming soon, I will upload a map of all of these spots to this post.

GUJO HACHIMAN PART 1

One of the first places I went to was the visitors center. The first thing I noticed was they have some good high quality mochis and water drop cakes. I picked myself up a few just in case I wouldn't be able to find anything else to eat in town and I was glad I did.

Gujo Hachiman is one of the most stunning places I've been to. It was absolutely worth the visit. It was impossible to take a bad picture there. That being said, finding safe food here was a struggle!

In the following posts I will share with you what I experienced and some of the things I learned from this trip.

A celiac diagnosis can feel claustrophobic

Travel is daunting

Japan is especially scary-

If you’ve ever been interested in visiting Japan and started looking into it you may have discovered-

• Panko encrusted EVERYTHING

• Soy sauce (wheat and soy) is in everything

• There are noodles everywhere

• The general public has never heard nor do they understand celiac disease

• Not even rice is safe, because they put barley malt in the rice

But don’t feel like your dreams have been crushed.

Your trip will be different from someone’s who doesn’t have celiac disease, but:

You can still go

you can still have FUN

and you can still eat good FOOD

Even as a celiac, Japan’s food is some of the 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘯. Maybe I’m ignorant because I’ve only been raised on American food, but the quality of ingredients in Japan are so much better and it shows.

You shouldn’t have to miss out!

I’ve done all of the research for you.
