LAST STATION CHURCHGATE?

Today, Western Railway terminates at Churchgate, but that wasn’t the case when the first train ran on the line, then known as the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway, in November 1864. The terminating station then was Grant Road. The line was extended in 1866 to Bombay Backbay station (somewhere between Marine Lines and Churchgate). By 1870, the line was extended further and the Backbay station was shifted further south closer to where the Church Gate of the erstwhile Fort of Bombay used to be. And on this day, 155 years ago, the Churchgate station started functioning. It ceased to be a terminating station three years later, when the line was extended further south to Colaba. It would be 1931 before it became a terminating station once again.
