If you're looking for some , look no farther than Brown County State Park in Indiana. Located near the quaint town of Nashville, IN, which also happens to be a thriving art community, Brown county is often referred to as the "Little Smokies." If you visit during fall peak leaf season, the views are simply beautiful.

We just returned from our annual fall camping trip to Brown County, and here are a few of our favorite things to do in the area.

1. Hiking! All the hiking. The loops around Strahl Lake and Ogle Lake are two of our favorites. Be aware that these hikes can be very busy on weekends in the fall.
2. Mountain biking. My husband and boys love mountain biking and Brown County State Park has a fabulous selection of mountain biking trails.
3. Visiting downtown Nashville (Indiana, not Tennessee!). Nashville is a small town, but has lots of shops and restaurants to explore. We love to have breakfast at the Artist's Colony and then spend a morning exploring the unique shops.
4. Dinner with music and a view. The Restaurant at Hard Truth Distillery has great food, outdoor seating with a beautiful view of the leaves, and live music on the weekends.
5. Nothing. 😂 Our fall pilgrimage to Brown County always falls in the midst of a very busy season for our family. My favorite part of our getaway is taking time to slow down. Reading, napping, and just sitting and enjoying the view are some of my favorite activities.

The last few months have proved to be quite busy for the two of us - which is why you haven't heard as much from us! Alexa has had several life changes and I (Caryn) have been trying to keep up with kids and all their activities! But we're jumping back into things with a series of posts geared towards fall travel.

Fall is an amazing time to take a trip - especially if you are intentional in your planning. Do you have a fall getaway planned? Here are a few tips to get the most out of your fall travel.

Don't have a fall trip planned, but wish you did? Put a reminder on your calendar for next spring. I typically try to give myself a reminder six months ahead of time.

Look at my adorable little hikers!! I recently stumbled across this picture that was taken 5 years ago when we were visiting Glacier NP. I can't get over how little they were. We were on the Grinnell Glacier trail and hiked over 8 miles that day. Looking back, I think we were a little crazy.

They're cute, but hiking with kids can definitely be challenging. Here are a few tips that I've learned over the years to keep hiking together enjoyable for everyone.

Make it fun. Be willing to slow your pace. Look for fun things in nature. Let them climb and explore. Sing songs or do chants while you hike. Not only does this make it fun, you will also make memories with your kids.

Bring lots of snacks. I can’t overstate this enough. Hungry kids = not a fun hike. Special surprise snacks are helpful for when the going gets tough. We call these "power pills" and find that a chewy treat works.

Consider hiking equipment for your kids. Our kids love their hiking backpacks with water bladders. Kid sized hiking poles are also a lot of fun and can get kids excited about a hike.

Don't automatically choose the easiest hike. Our kids get bored and melt down on an easy path. They want a trail that is interesting and has lots of opportunities to climb and play. Rock scrambles are their absolute favorite.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to start small and start them young! And get out there and have some fun together!

Summer in the Midwest is lake season. I spent a lot of my summers throughout high school and college on the lake and loved it. Which of course makes me want to share that experience with my kids. Buying a boat or a lake house is not feasible for us right now, but we can rent a boat!

We spent this past weekend camping at Raccoon State Recreation Area in Indiana and rented a boat one day. My kids had an absolute blast. The grins on their faces as we took off across the lake were priceless! And we made so many fun memories of tubing together!

What experience have you been wanting to share with your kids? What do you need to do to make it happen?

Today we hiked several great trails (including the ladders!) in Shades State Park, which is near the more well known Turkey Run State Park in Indiana. It's also near Raccoon Lake SRA, which happens to be where we are camping this weekend. Several trails have ladders that go up and down the ravines. The hiking is pretty fantastic, in my opinion, and it is much less crowded than Turkey Run, which makes it easier to experience the wildlife. Today we saw a group of pileated woodpeckers, a turtle, and several slugs and snails. Check it out and let us know what you think!

This week's comes from our family's most recent summer camping trip. Sleeping Bear Dunes is a National Lakeshore in Michigan that is an absolute gem. The water is so clear and the most beautiful blue color. The dunes are enormous with the tallest being 450 feet high. There are great options for hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, swimming, tubing the river, climbing sand dunes, or just spending a day lounging at the beach. Don't miss this fabulous park that is about a 5 hour drive from Chicago and less than an hour drive from Traverse City.

We enjoyed our week of exploring Ohiopyle State Park in Pennsylvania this week, so I thought I would share some highlights for a little !

1. Stop by the Visitor's Center and enjoy the view of Ohiopyle Falls.
2. Explore Cucumber Falls. You can even walk behind the waterfall!
3. Go whitewater rafting!
4. Have fun on the natural waterslide!
5. Take time to hike or just explore a stream. We enjoyed hiking Ferncliff Peninsula which is home to several rare species.
6. It's also a great place to camp.

Check it out!

Why are mountains so funny? Because they are hill areas! In honor of Father's day, we're telling Dad jokes today. And maybe we'll even laugh at them instead of groaning. 😂

By the way, did you hear the story about the mountain? I couldn’t get over it. . .

Monday we head out for a week of camping - our first of the summer! So today I am prepping the camper for the season, starting with the bathroom. By filling our bathroom with toiletries for our family of 5 now, it makes packing for a weekend of camping so much easier next time. I'll stock the kitchen with essentials too so that next time we camp I'll just throw in clothes and food and off we go! What can you do now to make camping simpler this summer?
