Sarnath (2015). Known as the Deer Park in Buddhism, here Siddartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, first taught his path of enlightenment. Sarnath is one of the four most important pilgrimages sites in Buddhism. Here, devotees of Buddhism go on pilgrimage seeking enlightenment in the place where Siddartha’s disciple Kodanna achieved enlightenment under his instruction. The domed structure is the Dhamekh Stupa (The “Reign of Dharma”) was completed around AD 500 and may contain some of the ashes of the cremated Buddha.

India Gate at night (2020). Designed by the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1931, the India Gate memorials the 70,000-plus Indian soldiers who died serving the British Empire in World War One and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Sometimes compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Gate stands at 138 feet in height, and marks one end of the famous ceremonial Raj path (or King’s Road) in New Delhi.

Dharamsala Temple (2015).The Dalai Lama, fleeing violence and threats in China under MaoZedong, journeyed through the Himalayas to India. Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru offered him refuge in the village of Dharamsala. In 1960, the Dalai Lama established a Tibetan government in exile there. The many temples and shrines in the city preserve aspects of Tibetan culture and history, housing some 80,000 manuscripts.

Brother and Sister in Kathmandu (Nepal, 2015). During a pause in heavy traffic, I noticed this brother and sister watching me. I rolled down the window and said, “Namaste!” The little girl happily clapped her hands together, greeting me in return. A few days after this photo was taken, Nepal experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, destroying much of Kathmandu and nearby cities. I still pray that these happy children survived and thrived.

Later, after guests have departed, the joyous couple will meet with close family in the bride’s house around 2:00 am where Brahmin priests will perform the Saptapadi (the“seven steps”) ceremony: “We have taken the Seven Steps.
