What a difference 2 weeks makes! These videos were taken from (pretty much!) the same spot exactly two weeks apart and I think it’s fascinating to see the changes that happen in that period, especially at this time of year.

Obviously it had rained a lot more in the second video and the colours no longer have the end of summer greens but are fully autumnal.

This beautiful spot is Galleny Force on Stonethwaite Beck in Borrowdale. On both of the days these videos were taken, we were out running over a low level circular walk that is part of our new walking holiday around Borrowdale and Derwentwater.

It’s going to be a great one for people who like stunning views without heading up mountains, as the low level routes on this holiday really give the high level ones a run for their money!

📍 Glaramara, Borrowdale, the Lake District

Out enjoying the autumnal sunshine in Borrowdale last week. We’re still trying out a few options for the higher level circular walk on our new walking holiday and the ascent of Glaramara is one of the possibilities!

It combines some stunning walking in the valley before a fairly challenging ascent up Hinds Gill to the summit and a fantastic ridge walk, with views down Derwentwater to Skiddaw, for the descent.

Amazing scenes of the Northern Lights over Kirkby Lonsdale tonight! 🤩

These are taken with a 10 second exposure on an iPhone but they were visible to the naked eye as more of a pink haze! We’ve seen them a few times here but these were the best so far! The alert is still really high so worth having a look outside if you’re somewhere with fairly low light pollution.

Gorgeous autumnal colours at Aysgarth Falls yesterday!🍂

We love this time of year when all the colours are changing, and Aysgarth Falls is a perfect place to see it.

We were just having a short stroll around the falls, but you can visit Aysgarth Falls as part of lots of longer walks, including a great circuit to Castle Bolton, which is part of our ‘Wensleydale and its Waterfalls’ walking holiday!

Beautiful Swaledale! 😍

One of our absolute favourite areas for walking in the Yorkshire Dales, we have two walking holiday routes through Swaledale – the more challenging ‘Remote Swaledale and Arkengarthdale’ route and the gentler ‘Meander through Swaledale’.

Both take in stunning views, traditional villages, pretty riverside, beautiful wildflower meadows and much more.

Despite being one of the quieter parts of the Yorkshire Dales, Swaledale actually gets booked up further ahead than most other places due to the limited accommodation and the fact that several long-distance paths pass through the area. So if this is somewhere you would be interested in visiting in 2025, it is worth starting to think about it now! Do have a look on our website or drop us a line if you have any questions about our trips

What a great week! 🤩

Matt is back from his week away guiding the ‘Highlights of the Coast to Coast’ walking holiday’ with Adrian of . The trip was a group visiting from Australia arranged by , and , and it was the first time Matt’s done Coast to Coast guiding, but hopefully not the last! Thanks to Mark from for getting him involved.

The sun shone along the coast for both the first and last days of the trip but, despite fairly inclement weather in between, the group still had a great time and saw some of Britain’s most beautiful scenery, taking in three National Parks (, and !) as well as beautiful stretches of the Cumbrian and North Yorkshire Coast!

Matt’s now giving his legs a well earned rest with a couple of days in the office before the kids break up for the summer holidays! 🤣

Great day out in the Howgill Fells last week working with to guide a group on a corporate team building day on behalf of .

The group was staying in Ravenstonedale so we planned a route straight from their door into the northern section of the Howgill Fells, taking in the summits of Randygill Top and Green Bell.

It’s a beautiful area dominated by the unique geography of the Howgills and with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It’s also an area where you can walk for hours and hardly see another soul - bliss!

Technically in Cumbria, this area is actually part of the National Park. In reality, however, it is a landscape with its own identity, very different from the craggier fells of the Lake District to the west or the hills and valleys of Yorkshire to the east.

We’d definitely recommend adding it to your bucket list - or you can explore it on our ‘Food and Fells of the Cumbrian Dales’ walking holiday! 😁

Our 'Meander through Swaledale' walking holiday is a gorgeous route for exploring a quieter (and one of the most beautiful!) part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park at a relaxed pace, so it was great to receive this fantastic feedback from a couple who did it last week:

"Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our meander through Swaledale last week. There was so much to enjoy with this holiday and we wanted to thank you both for everything you did to make it memorable. The standard of communication, choice of itinerary, selection of accommodation and attention to detail were all outstanding. This was our first ever 'proper' walking holiday and it certainly won't be our last. Indeed, Ros is already eyeing up your options for Wensleydale! Finally, special mention must be made for the BEST EVER walking guides we have ever come across. We loved the detail and clarity of these - so easy to follow and so packed with interesting local information. And we didn't get lost once! Brilliant."

Our new 'Explore Ullswater' walking holiday has just been featured in The Telegraph! 🥳

It's a 4-6 night break, taking in a loop of the lake, known as 'The Ullswater Way', and some of our recommended circular walks from Glenridding - either a gentle valley circuit or more challenging routes into the hills! You can also add extra days for more walking or to get out on the water!

In the article, Helen Pickles writes about being able to explore the Lake District by car and our holiday is perfect for this - you can get to the start on the west coast mainline to Penrith then a regular bus to Pooley Bridge. From there, the rest of the trip is on foot! (Or boat across the lake if you fancy adding that in).

You can see the full article here (if you subscribe!), or there are some some snippets and photos from the route below! www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/united-kingdom/england/cumbria/lake-district/leave-car-behind-lake-district-holiday/

📍 Pen-y-Ghent, Yorkshire Dales

We were so lucky with the weather for our social walk up Pen-y-Ghent on Sunday! After several days of wild and windy weather, conditions were absolutely perfect and the views stretched for miles!

What a great day out with a lovely group!

Our next social walk in April – our ‘Caves and Cascades’ route from settle – is fully booked, but there are a few spaces left on our beautiful‘Bluebells and Boulders’ walk from Clapham on 18 May. Details and booking here: www.muddybootswalkingholidays.com/muddy-boots-social-walks.

Hope to see you there!

📍 Angletarn Pikes and Place Fell, the Lake District

We did this walk late last year, but I forgot to share anything about it! Angleton Pikes and Place Fell are both absolutely stunning summits with gorgeous views, and were particularly atmospheric in this late afternoon, winter lighting!

There are a few ways to reach them, but we were covering them as part of the high-level circular walk from Glenridding that is part of our new ‘Explore Ullswater’ walking holiday, so took the boat from Glenridding to Howtown and did a stunning walk from there up Beda Head before continuing on to Angletarn Pikes and Place Fell then returning to Glenridding! An absolutely beautiful day out!

Glad we managed to make the most of the beautiful wintery weather last week before everything changed! 🌧️💨

Our walk didn’t go quite as planned as the parking we were aiming for was a sheet of ice, so we quickly rejigged things and parked in Coniston for a gorgeous stroll up to the Coppermines.

It wasn’t a long walk but the whole area looked stunning, with streams partially frozen, icicles dripping off waterfalls and the mining remains covered with a pretty dusting of snow. We really wished we had time to keep going but will just have to wait for another snow day!

📍 The Kentmere Horseshoe

There have been some fantastic winter walking days so far this season (in amongst a few less pleasant ones! 🌧️ 💨 😬) and Matt made the most of one of them earlier this month to do the Kentmere Horseshoe.

It’s long been on his bucket list and he had a perfect day for it, with beautiful lighting and quiet paths.

It’s a big 20km day out taking in 8 Wainwrights and several smaller hills so not one for the faint hearted, but if you put the effort in you’re rewarded with stunning views all day and paths that are a lot quieter than many of the more well known Lake District Hikes.

The time has come to share some of our highlights from 2023! 🥳

In a year that has involved a lot of change for us at Muddy Boots, including relocating home and office to our new base in Kirkby Lonsdale (perfectly situated between the Dales and the Lakes!) and launching our first Lake District holidays, there are lots of highlights to choose from, so these are just a few of them.

As ever, thanks so much for following along with us - we really appreciate all the enthusiasm and support we get on here. We have lots planned for 2024 so hope you stay with us! 😁

The highlights in the pictures are:

🥾 Lots of time spent route planning in the Lake District to create our first two self-guided walking holidays in the Lake District, which we launched towards the end of the year (this is in Great Langdale on our ‘Heart of Lakeland’ holiday)

🥾 Lots of great Muddy Boots Social Walks and starting our membership scheme (this one was the Caves and Cascades route from Settle that we’re running again in April).

🥾 Working with the group again, leading two private guided walking holidays around the Dales (this is looking down Swaledale from Kisdon Hill)

🥾 Matt doing his Mountain Leader training in April (he will be doing his assessment this coming April! 🤞)

🥾 Making the most of long Spring evenings in the Dales (here at the famous Oxenber Wood bluebells)…

🥾 … and in the Lakes! Here Matt is getting in some wild camping practice for his Mountain Leader training.

🥾 Both of our children being at school! 😂 We celebrated our new found freedom with a very rare walk together to Easedale Tarn on one of the very hot early September days!

🥾 Lots of private guided walks, particularly for international visitors, with this path near Grassington always being a favourite!

Ok, we can’t guarantee the snow and ice, but we can guarantee that our New Year’s Day social walk around Aysgarth and West Burton will be a great way to start the New Year! 😁

Taking in beautiful scenery, gushing waterfalls, a pretty village and loads of classic Yorkshire Dales views (and maybe scenes like the pictures if we’re lucky! ❄️🤞) it packs a lot into a fairly gentle 5 mile circuit.

We still have a few spots left - full details and booking on the website via link in bio 🔗 or just drop me a DM with any questions.

Hope to see you there! 😀

📍 Grisedale and St Sunday Crag

A moody November day made for some atmospheric conditions as Matt headed along peaceful Grisedale to Grisedale Tarn and up to the summit of St Sunday Crag.

Low cloud looked brooding on the hilltops but fortunately lifted enough for some stunning views of Ullswater.

A circuit of Grisedale is a low level option on our new ‘Explore Ullswater’ walking holiday, but we’re also giving the option to turn into into a more challenging day in the hills by heading up to the tarn and on to St Sunday Crag, before dropping down to rejoin the low level route in Glenamara Park for a gentle finish through Patterdale and along the shore of Ullswater. Full details of the holiday are in our website 😁

Matt was out last week doing one of the high level options for our new ‘Explore Ullswater’ walking holiday - live on the website now! www.muddybootswalkingholidays.com/explore-ullswater

It starts by taking the Ullswater Steamer from Goenridding ti Howtown then a linear walk back taking in Beda Fell, Angle Tarn and the Angletarn Pikes, with absolutely gorgeous views throughout!

Matt has such a beautiful evening that he couldn’t resist a quick detour to Place Fell on the way to catch the sun going down behind the hills, but that isn’t officially part of the route! 🙄😂

📍 Stone Arthur, Grasmere

With a gorgeous forecast but not a lot of time, we headed out for a quick ‘out and back’ walk from Grasmere on Friday in stunning conditions.

The temperature was very low but it was surprisingly warm in the sun on the steep ascent of Stone Arthur out of Grasmere. It only takes about an hour to reach its craggy summit, which is visible from all around Grasmere and begging to be climbed! A great option if you’re short on time but still want a good climb and stunning views.

Scroll to the end for Matt trying to be clever with a sunburst! 😂

📍 Loughrigg Fell, Lake District

A problem with the car meant Matt’s grand plans for the gorgeous weather in Saturday had to be curtailed, but sometimes a forced change of plan can work out perfectly and the walk up Loughrigg Fell from Ambleside and around Loughrigg Terrace was absolutely stunning! 🤩

At only 335m, Loughrigg is tiny by comparison to many of its neighbours, but it’s positioning as an outlying fell means the 360 degree views from the top are absolutely stunning - taking in Windermere, Elterwater, Esthwaite Water, Coniston Water, Loughrigg Tarn, Grasmere and, as you start to descend, Rydal Water, as well as many, many surrounding fells! Huge reward for comparatively little effort.

It’s a great option for people who like a dip in the chilly Lake District waters too as , depending on which route you go for, you can easily meet the shores of Grasmere, Rydal Water and Loughrigg Tarn, all absolutely wonderful places for a swim.

The linear route on our ‘Heart of Lakeland’ walking holiday between Ambleside and Great Langdale skirts the slopes of Loughrigg Fell and offers the option of a short detour to this fantastic summit! 😀

📍 Ullswater, Lake District

A gorgeous day on Friday for us to continue our route planning for our next walking holiday in the Lake District - Explore Ullswater.

It’s going to include doing a full circuit of the lake - a route known as the ‘Ullswater Way’ - over two linear routes, but also includes time to do a circular route into the stunning scenery that surrounds Glenridding, at the southern end of the Lake.

We were doing the section from Glenridding to Howtown, on the eastern side of the lake, and it’s a beautiful walk with fantastic lake and mountain view’s interspersed with gorgeous sections of woodland.

We had to rush back for school pick up so, rather than continuing on to Pooley Bridge and the bottom the the lake, we ended the day at Howtown and took the boat back to Glenridding - a fantastic way to end a walk!

📍 Grisedale, Lake District

Gorgeous autumnal walk this week as we start planning our second self-guided walking holiday in the Lakes!

Despite a bit of a lack of sunshine (but the rain held off so no complaints!), the colours were absolutely stunning and the whole walk was a delight - quiet paths, stunning views and a real ‘in the mountains’ feel despite gaining very little height.

This is going to be one of the lower level options on our ‘Explore Ullswater’ holiday, which will include linear routes broadly following the Ullswater Way along both sides of the the lake and circular walks from Glenridding and Pooley Bridge!

🥳Our first Lake District walking holiday is ready, up on the website and available for booking! 🥳

This has been a real labour of love for us over the last few months and a really exciting step for our business so do have a look if you're interested in finding out more: www.muddybootswalkingholidays.com/lake-district-walking-holidays.

Our first holiday is called 'Heart of Lakeland' and is based around the northern tip of Windermere and the Langdale Valleys - absolutely stunning areas to explore!

In a change from our Yorkshire Dales routes, there are more options available on this holiday so you can choose between low level and high level routes each day (or ask for longer, more challenging options if you prefer!). All the details are on the website but do drop us a line if you have any questions.

📍 The Head of Wharfedale from Buckden

This classic circuit is one of our absolute favourite walks for Autumn (pictured here in early November).

Climbing above the mist sitting in the valley bottom is a stunning way to start the walk, the autumn colours are beautiful, paths are good so it’s easily walkable even after spells of bad weather (save for the fact that you might get wet feet at the stepping stones shortly after heavy rain!), there’s loads of variety, and the route climbs high enough for great views but not so high you’re likely to find yourself in low cloud!

This route is one of the circular walks on our ‘Wharfedale Ramble’ walking holiday and also one we’re hoping to run as a social walk again in 2024, including a visit to lovely !
