A new must-do that I will recommend for anyone visiting the east side of Hawaii’s Big Island - the Hawaii Botanical Gardens! 🌺

Absolutely stunning, full of tropical foliage, orchids, lilies, waterfalls, and everything in between. I’ve been enthralled by tropical plants since I was little, and especially for plant lovers, this is a dreamy afternoon in Hawaii if there ever was one. 😍

And since it’s not really along the main tourist stomping grounds of the island, chances are you will have a relatively peaceful stroll down to the ocean in this tropical paradise. 🌴 🌊 🌸

🇮🇹HAPPY ITALIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH!🇮🇹

I’ve been planning more and more trips for people traveling to Italy in hopes of visiting their ancestral home, taking their elderly family member to see where his or her ancestors came from, and sometimes even meeting cousins, aunts, nonnas, etc. 👵

It is SUCH a rewarding experience to get to play a part in making this kind of experience come to life for my clients. And as my family is also from Italy and I am in the process of applying for dual citizenship myself, it is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. ♥️

One of the most heartwarming moments I’ve ever witnessed was watching my great uncle sit around a table in Sicily with family members he was meeting for the first time, not speaking any Italian, but enjoying a home-cooked Italian meal, laughter, wine, photos, and hugs all around. 🍷

Over 5 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 2000 and there are currently over 26 million Americans of Italian descent residing in the US. This makes Italian-Americans the fifth largest ethnic group in our nation. Each year, Italians around the country take time to celebrate their heritage, history, and culture with festivals and parades. The purpose is to honor and recognize the centuries of achievements, successes, and valuable contributions of Italian immigrants and Italian Americans. 🇮🇹

No! It’s not an espresso martini at 11am… what do you think I am? Some kind of savage? (👀)

It’s actually called CAFFE SHAKERATO and you can order it in some bars in Italy. It’s just coffee shaken with ice and you can sometimes have milk added (although for some reason this particular bar said ‘you can’t have milk in a caffè shakerato…’ - that’s Italians for ya, they all have their own “rules” about coffee…).

This is what I order when it’s too hot for me to think about drinking a hot beverage and I still want to sit at a cafe enjoying an Italian coffee.

I’m thinking about doing a more extensive ‘guide to ordering coffee in Italy’. What do you think? Something you’d be interested in? ☕️

PS - do you believe me now that it wasn’t a martini? 😅😉🤔

Liz + Ryan went to Vienna last month for the TSwift concert that ended up being cancelled (😢) but managed to have a blast exploring Austria + Germany nonetheless!

Story time! 📖

I was REALLY nervous to drive in northern Italy on my recent trip to the Dolomites.
I have spent the last year living on and off in Palermo, Sicily and suffice to say this has clouded my interpretation of what it means to drive in Italy in general. Let’s just say laws do not exist in Palermo. 😂

But I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up my car and got on the road from Venice. It was no different than driving in, say, Michigan (save for smoother roads and sometimes a bit more narrow). As long as you have GPS navigation, driving in most of Italy is ✨easy peasy✨.

And it’s necessary if you want to get off the main tourist trail/away from the big cities. So many times I have potential clients say they want ‘off the beaten path’, but you can’t have that without your own, more flexible mode of transportation.

There are a few nuances when it comes to renting a car in Italy though, and that’s what Aum Journeys can help with. Work with us and we’ll get you confidently on the road in no time. 😉

Tre Cime di Lavaredo means three peaks of Lavaredo in Italian. This is a moderate hike and one of the most well-known in the Dolomites.

There are a lot of different routes you can take, making the hike as easy or as difficult as you’d like, depending on your ability. And there are even ‘rifugios’ where you can stop for a coffee or a bite to eat!
