The drama that was the destroyed rim is over. The branch of the rental company in Christchurch had an extra. He also fixed(?) the water leak on the passenger door and disconnected the driver side mirror motor that was making a grinding noise. BTW, we're in a 2002 Toyota Estima (mini van) that currently has 462,515 kilometers on it.

Still running on the doughnut ("space saver" here). Can't find a replacement rim. Heading to Christchurch to swap vehic...

Fun with falling rocks. Spent a good portion of the day in Oamaru. On the way to Mt. Cook, coming around a blind turn, there was a pointy, basketball sized rock in the road. It was the rock or the oncoming car. Destroyed the rim. No tools in the rental to unmount the spare, jack up the car or anything. Got a local mechanic (Lex) to come out and help. Had to backtrack to a city with an auto repair place. Should be back on the road by tomorrow morning. The Turd (our rental van) has a temporary new shoe.
