While I had secretly hoped for Southampton following its expansion, I'm genuinely excited to witness Bournemouth's emergence as a key hub for Jet2. Starting in April next year, Jet2 will introduce 16 new routes, offering holidaymakers here in the south convenient access to popular destinations in Spain, Portugal, Turkey, and Greece. 🐘 Elevate Your Elephant Experience: Choose 'Observation Only' Sanctuaries 🐘
I want to talk about ethical elephant tourism and why choosing 'observation only' sanctuaries matters. This afternoon I attended an incredibly insightful Kiwano Eco Travel webinar about why it is so important that we rethink wildlife tourism.
When I ask clients what they would like to do or see when they travel to Thailand or to Sri Lanka they often tell me that they (or the kids) want to see and get close to the elephants. As someone who is passionate about sustainable tourism and wildlife in particular, I'll be honest, this doesn't sit well with me.
🌱 Natural behaviours matter: Elephant camps often offer interactive activities like feeding and bathing. However, these develop behaviours that are not natural for elephants. True sanctuaries prioritise providing environments where elephants can exhibit their natural instincts.
🌾 Diverse diets for healthy lives: Camps labeled as 'sanctuaries' offering elephant feeding may limit elephants to just a few grasses and a diet high in sugar (like sugar beet or banana fed to them by tourists), essentially an elephant 'fast-food' restaurant! In contrast, genuine sanctuaries allow these majestic creatures to roam freely, enjoying a diverse diet which can be made up of as much as 165 different plant species.
💦 Bathing and mud baths – research shows that elephants spend a minimal amount of time bathing – an average of 0.3% of the day (only fully submerging themselves 2-3 times a year when it is really hot), and only 2.1% having a mud bath. Offering daily baths, as some camps do, can lead to skin and feet issues. Real sanctuaries understand and respect the natural rhythm of elephants, letting them engage in these activities sparingly.
🚫 Unintended cruelty: As tourists, we may unknowingly support cruelty when we visit places that offer direct interaction with elephants. The elephants have to be trained so they are safe around us humans and the training process is inhumane, often involving separating young calves from their mothers through a distressing method called 'crushing' https://www.worldanimalprotection.org.au/news/cruel-elephant-training-process-exposed Real sanctuaries don't compromise the natural behaviour of these incredible animals.
But wildlife conservation programmes NEED tourism to be able to afford to protect these animals. So, let's be conscious tourists and choose sanctuaries that prioritise the well-being and natural behaviours of elephants. Together, we can ensure our tourism choices contribute to a world where these majestic creatures thrive in environments that respect and honour their true nature. 🐘💚

Fancy Florence?
As you know, Italy is my favourite European Country. And Florence - the birthplace of the Renaissance and a treasure chest brimming with UNESCO World Heritage sites - has to be one of my favourite cities there.
In spite of its popularity as a tourist destination, it somehow maintains an authentic charm that can make you feel like a local even in peak season.
