Explore a local wetland any time of year! 🌱

This scenic photo was taken by Jason Charlwood of a boreal wetland in the Northwest Territories during the summer months, but wetlands can be beautiful in any season.

Nature has so many benefits that enhance our well-being and we encourage you to get outdoors to connect with nature this weekend. To learn about wetland destinations to visit in Yukon and Northwest Territories, visit

While March weather keeps us guessing, one thing's for sure: signs of spring are all around. Like the return of some of our favourite migratory bird species! 🦆

While some mallards may not have needed to migrate, the ones that did choose to head south are among the first ducks to return to their breeding grounds in the spring. As soon as open water is available, they will return in breeding pairs, where they can be seen throughout the majority of Canada.

Spring is officially just two weeks away and with it comes the enchanting spectacle of bird migration. 🦆

We're looking forward to seeing all of our favourite species return, like this bufflehead captured at sunset in Gaspésie.

The muskie season opens today across much of Ontario. This impressive fish can be hard to catch, but that’s what makes reeling one in all the better. Check out this article from Ontario OUT of DOORS Magazine that helps explain what makes them so tough:

The weather and the fishing has been HOT HOT HOT!

Check out Kate's Master Angler Northern Pike coming in at a whopping 41.5inches!! Nice work and great job to their Guide Cory for putting them on quality fish during their stay with us!!

Majestic

I was able to get out for a little drive earlier this weekend around the backroads west of Edmonton and found this majestic Great Grey Owl, the phantom of the boreal forest.

I'll quite often see owls while out for a drive (especially greys) though this one was particularly difficult to spot at first, perched on a snag at the edge of a clearing, waiting in ambush for anything that moved below. With variable cloud cover, beams of light danced all around the subject and after waiting for about 15 minutes, the light illuminated the owl perfectly.

It's been a challenging year for me so far as I haven't been able to get out to take photos as much as I'd like due to some health issues, but small moments in nature like this really help to accelerate the healing process and I'm hopeful to get out a bit more in the coming months.

Thanks for looking.

Cougars, wolves, bears and more… oh my!

Despite these animals preferring to keep far away from human activity, encounters can still happen.

Follow these helpful tips to ensure both the wildlife’s safety and your own:

✅Make noise. Let wildlife know you are in the area.

✅ Watch for animal signs such as tracks and droppings.

✅ Hike in groups. Groups are less likely to have a negative encounter with wildlife.

✅Always carry bear spray.

✅Stay on official trails and travel during daylight hours.

✅If you come across a deceased animal, leave the area immediately and report it to Banff Dispatch (403-762-1470)

For additional safety information visit a Parks Canada information centre or visit us online at: http://ow.ly/ER3J50LFhg4

Spotting wildlife in Canmore and Kananaskis is undoubtedly a thrilling and unforgettable experience. If you'd like to snap a photo, be sure to keep your distance and use a telephoto lens or zoom in with your camera to give our locals a safe space to roam.
