Levadas in Madeira are a smart system for diverting water to both farmers and villages. Along the main channels, there are smaller offshoots and gates that can be opened or closed to direct the flow. Farmers can open these gates to irrigate their fields, while other channels lead to reservoirs and cisterns in villages, supplying drinking water.
They have become lovely nature water trails. As you walk alongside them, you get to enjoy the lush landscapes and breathtaking views.
It’s the perfect mix of history and nature....the trails can bring you into little villages where you can enjoy lunch or fresh fruit stands!
Headed up to the highest peak by jeep to Centro Freira da Madeira with a hike through Laurel forest and off to the stunning area of Miradara.
Did a lot in one day but so happy to have experienced it all.
If you enjoy views, hiking and nature this is the spot for you!
Ok had a fabulous day by heading up on a jeep adventure to highest peek on Medeora called, Centro Freira da maderia then, did a hike in the Laurel Forest and last but not least saw stunning views from the southernmost tip of Madeira called Miradara.

Had a very lovely lunch at Il Vivaldi - smoked salmon, and fresh Black scabbard fish. 😋 We had to walk off those calories so our knowledgeable tour guide Graca Lopes showed as the town of Funchal
Graca, is born and raised in Madeira and has been offering guided tours for 36 years! She is such a wealthy of information she is truly is amazing. When we are ready to book your trip to Madeira we will need to work with her for your special time in Madeira.
What walking tour is not complete with a stop for chocolate and pastries, well deserved of course!

Checked into Rio Alto last night and had a wonderful sleep in their comfy beds well appointed rooms. Then woke up to a lovely view…..great way to start the day!!
