Randall K. Roberts is an award-winning nature photographer based in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He thrived on the fast past and creative challenges.

Roberts started out as a newspaper photographer, working in black and white to record life’s daily dramas. When his path took him away from making news photos for a living, he relished the chance to make pictures solely for himself.

“I didn't want photography to feel like work anymore,” Randall says. “For me, this meant making pictures in color and looking for the beauty in the world around me.”

In more than two decades of making pictures to please himself, Randall's work has been published in regional and national magazines including National Geographic Traveler, U.S. News & World Report, New Mexico Magazine, Popular Science, and Albuquerque Monthly; and in books and calendars by National Geographic Books, Falcon Press, Rio Nuevo Press, Sierra Press, Landmark, Sierra Club and others. I’m happy to share that my image of "Sunrise on Palouse Fields " has been included as one of the top 100 images in the annual North American Nature Photographers Association Showcase contest. There were over 3200 images submitted. My image placed in the Landscapes category. There are some incredible photos among the winners.

I visited Cave Creek Canyon in southeast Arizona last week. It's a birding hotspot and I was able to add 10 "lifers" to my bird list. Here a few images from that visit.

I found a very cooperative eastern bluebird today at the Rio Grande Nature Center. I think he was happy with the nice weather and didn't pay much attention to me.

I'm back home in New Mexico after a trip to Gilbert, Arizona to bird at the Riparian Preserve and other locations there. Here are a few more favorite images.

I spent most of the first week of 2024 in Gilbert, Arizona birding at the riparian preserve there. (Pix to come). But my favorite image of the week was from a small lake at a golf course I passed by on the way. There were dozens of cormorants and egrets there. When a great egret landed very close to a group of double-crested cormorants the cormorants expressed their extreme dissatisfaction and essentially told the egret to go away. It made for a neat photo.
