Randall K. Roberts Photography Randall K. Roberts is an award-winning nature photographer based in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He thrived on the fast past and creative challenges.

Roberts started out as a newspaper photographer, working in black and white to record life’s daily dramas. When his path took him away from making news photos for a living, he relished the chance to make pictures solely for himself.

“I didn't want photography to feel like work anymore,” Randall says. “For me, this meant making pictures in color and looking for the beauty in the world around me.”

In more than two decades of making pictures to please himself, Randall's work has been published in regional and national magazines including National Geographic Traveler, U.S. News & World Report, New Mexico Magazine, Popular Science, and Albuquerque Monthly; and in books and calendars by National Geographic Books, Falcon Press, Rio Nuevo Press, Sierra Press, Landmark, Sierra Club and others. To purchase or see more of his photos, visit his Fine Art America store.

I spent most of the first week of 2024 in Gilbert, Arizona birding at the riparian preserve there. (Pix to come). But my favorite image of the week was from a small lake at a golf course I passed by on the way. There were dozens of cormorants and egrets there. When a great egret landed very close to a group of double-crested cormorants the cormorants expressed their extreme dissatisfaction and essentially told the egret to go away. It made for a neat photo.

Still going through Costa Rica bird photos. Here's a slaty flowerpiercer in action. These birds have an upturned bill with a sharp hook at the end which enables them to pierce the base of flowers to extract nectar. They are found in mountainous areas above 4200 feet.

I was told by a birding guide that this long-billed thrasher makes these aggressive wing displays as a way of scaring up insects to eat. An interesting way to find lunch.

I just returned from a trip to south Texas in search of some "lifer" birds. In addition to adding 11 new species to my life list, I was able to make a few good photos, including this unique and very fast-moving scissor-tailed flycatcher. I'll post more bird photos from this trip over the next few days.

I’m happy to share that Presbyterian Healthcare Services has chosen one of my images to hang in their new patient tower at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. It’s an image of two playful coyote pups and it’s located on the seventh floor of tower F, which is scheduled to open on January 30.
