95 years ago, on February 5th, 1918. HMS Tuscania, carrying over 2000 American troops, was spotted by German submarine which fired torpedoes at the Tuscania and sent her to the bottom of the sea. Today she lies few miles of Scotland's Isle of Islay.
Later that year another troop carrier, HMS Otranto, involved in a collision with another ship, sank near Islay. Some of the troops were saved by other ships and locals, unfortunately several hundred died in those incidents.

In 1920. American Red Cross erected the American Monument on the Mull of Oa in memory of those who died when the Tuscania and the Otranto sank.

The Blue Marble photo is 40 years old today, taken by astronauts of Apollo 17 on December 7, 1972, at 10:39 UTC. The image is one of the few to show a fully illuminated Earth, as the astronauts had the Sun behind them when they took the image. It was taken at a distance of 45,000 kilometres from Earth and is likely one of the most widely distributed photographic images in existence.

Leteći na visini od oko 240 milja nad sjeveroistočnim dijelom Atlantskog oceana, posada na Međunarodnoj svemirskoj postaji fotografirala je ovaj noćni prizor.

Na norveško-ruskoj granici sve je pod kontrolom. Nema turista, osim nas. Krećemo ka Zagrebu, po GPS-u imamo 4037 km. Internet imamo još 50-ak km dok ne uđemo Finsku, a onda ste mirni dok se ne vratimo kući.

Everything is under control on the Norwegian-Russian border. There aren't any tourists, except for us. We are leaving for Zagreb, according to GPS we have 4037 km to go. We'll have Internet access for another 50 km until we enter Finland, and then you'll be left in peace until we get back.

Upravo smo stigli u Kirkenes, posljednji Norveški grad prije granice s Rusijom. Danas predvečer krećemo natrag prema domovini pa dok se ne vratimo, evo još malo teksta i fotografija.

Srijeda je, 24.08. Oko 9 sati ujutro, nakon 12 dana putovanja i oko 5000 prijeđenih kilometara, prelazimo sjevernu polarnicu na 66°33' zemljopisne širine i ulazimo u Arktički krug. Upravo se vratili s jedrenja ribarskim brodićem - rađen po uzoru na vikinške brodove - po Barentsovom moru. Vidjeli smo Nordkynn, najsjeverniju kopnenu točku Europe. Mokri, promrzli i zadovoljni. :)

Prije otprilike sat i pol vremena stigli smo na Nordkapp, nasjeverniju cestovnu točku Europe. Zora je.

About hour and a half ago we have arrived to Nordkapp, the northernmost road point of Europe. It's dawn.

Sinoć, oko pola sata nakon ponoći, na još uvijek svijetlom sjeverozapadnom nebu ugledali smo zelenkastu polarnu svjetlost. Pojava je bila vrlo slaba, ali oblici i njihovi pokreti otklonili su svaku sumnju da se približavamo vrhuncu našeg putovanja.
Last night, about half an hour past midnight, up in the still bright northwestern sky we saw a greenish Aurora. The display was very feint, but the shapes and their movements eliminated any doubt that we are approaching the peak of our journey.

U selo Aurlandsvangen stižemo iz Bergena tijekom noći i zaustavljamo se na parkingu na ušću rijeke Aurlandselvi u Aurlandsfjord. Aurlandsfjord je jedan od rukavaca Sognefjorda, koji je s 205 kilometara duljine najdulji fjord u Norveškoj i drugi najdulji na svijetu. Raspitujemo se u obližnjem turisti...

Preuzimanje kampera u petak 12.08. prolazi bez problema, ali smo se zbog neiskustva u ovakvom načinu putovanja preračunali s vremenom. Nakrcavamo kamper vodom, hranom i nama i krećemo na put oko 22 sata - šest kasnije no što smo planirali. Uz po jedno spavanje negdje u Austriji, Njemačkoj i Švedskoj...
