One of my most cherished memories of TBT’s trip to Bengal is the day we spent in a Santhal village.
It had everything that makes for a memorable experience... lush greenery, warm hospitality, curious animals who became my instant friends and of course, Good Food!

As we enjoyed a meal prepare by the local women, the love infused into every dish was palpable and the whole day was a gentle reminder of life’s beauty and simplicity.
After all that’s travel is all about experiencing new culture and alternate ways of life.

An Ode to Architects and Engineers who have lived in India and given us such gems that shine for us centuries later on the occasion of Vishvakarma Puja!!
Enjoy this glimpse at few sites we visited in last few months!
From lofty palaces, to towering temples & minars, grand mosques & cave statues... India has it all....
In the Hindu pantheon of gods Lord Vishwakarma is considered to be the Divine Architect of the Universe and the personification of Divine Creativity in the RigVeda. He is also regarded to have authored the Sthapatya Veda, the science of mechanics and architecture. He is thus regarded to be the patron deity of all craftsmen, with implements of trade often venerated in his honour on the occasion of Vishvakarma Puja!

The scorching heat of May and June, melts away with the first showers of monsoon, and the earth seems to sing to the tune of the Mother Nature!
The months of 'Aashadh' and 'Saawan' bring a whole new season of celebrations in Indian culture. There is no parallel in the world to the celebration of rains as in India - festivals, feasts, songs, and needless to say that it has inspired countless poets and writers, be it the rains and clouds forming the backdrop to Kalidas's Meghdoot as early as 5th CE or celebrations in music by Indian cinema..

The Lego Block Temple!!! (Just Kidding!)

One of the most intriguing temple ruins I have explored in the recent past is this Kakanmath Shiva Temple, in Sihoniya town of District Morena in Madhya Pradesh, the " " and it left me stumped!!
It is evident when you see the temple that no concrete or binding agent has been used in its construction and the entire monument just relies on the weight of the stones positioned strategically, locked in with each other through a basic system of interlocked-brackets within each layer of stones.

Although this same wondrous simplicity of its construction, and further hastened by the many temple raids after the 12th century from the Delhi Sultanate, inter-dynasty/tribe warfare and natural wear and tear, that has also made it stand so precariously today!!!
I felt one small tug/tap and the whole structure will collapse, just like a block of Lego would!

The temple, dedicated to Shiva, is said to have been commissioned by Kachchhapaghata Dynasty ruler Kirttiraja sometime between 1015 and 1035 AD. The name is derived from Kanak meaning 'gold' and 'matha' meaning shrine, and the bright golden shade of the stone used for making the structure perhaps is the reason for its name. Although some folk-legends also say that it is named after the queen Kakanavati or Kakanade, queen of Surajpala.

Commemorating World Heritage Day 2024 International Day for Monuments and Sites, we are excited to share the images of the Top 5 top heritage site explorations we did with our guests in India in the last 12 months, that blew our minds! And Fun Fact! 2 of the 5 are from MP, so you know which state we love most!

1- Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram, TN, 8th C. Built by the Pallava Kings, with mixed sets of mythological stories around Lord Shiva, Maa Durga and Vishnu and few other gods carved out in the hardest of stones that have stood test of time, right beside a hostile environment of the mighty waters of the Bay of Bengal! Once part of a famed port city of the Pallava empire, new sections were revealed, which were buried under the sea, after the Tsunami of Dec 2004.
2- Lamayuru Monastery, Ladakh, made entirely over mud & stone hills, first said to have been built in 11th C, with mud bricks.
3- Koshak Mahal, Chanderi, MP. 15th C. A very mysterious set of just three complete storeys of a Victory Palace made by Sultan of Malwa, Mehmud Shah Khilji to commemorate his victory over Sultan Mehmood Sharki in the battle of Kalpi.
4- One of group of Royal Cenotaphs, Kanchana Ghat of River Betwa, Orchha, MO, 16th C, of the Bundela kingdoms, but surprisingly which didn't belong to a family member of the Bundelas. The Chattri of Kripa Ram Gaur, a military man of the court.
5- Pancha Ratan Shyam Rai Temple, Bishnupur, Bengal, 17th C, made entirely of terracotta bricks, each beautifully designed, with square-shaped towers at the corners, it was built by king Raghunatha Singh of Mallabhum, to honour Lord Krishna. It is built in the panchratna architectural style in which five pillared roofs stand on the roof. The bricks denote various episodes from life of Lord Krishna.

It all began when the fourth Nizam, Salabat Jung, envisioned a palace fit for royalty!... For the next century the nizams of Hyderabad added as renovated to this dream palace. And in the heart of Hyderabad built by generations of royalty stood the magnificent Chowmahalla Palace, finally completed in 1867, it once served as the grand seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty.

Named Chowmahalla, meaning 'four palaces,' this opulent complex boasted four majestic palaces arranged around a central fountain and pool. Aftab Mahal, Afzal Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal, and Mahtab Mahal.

In the northern courtyard, the Bara Imam stretched proudly, once housing the administrative wing, while the Shishe-Alat mirrored its majesty on the opposite end.

Yet, the heart of Chowmahalla Palace beats within the Khilwat Mubarak, renowned for its exquisite wall and ceiling designs. Here, a mechanical clock ticks away over 250 years, alongside 19 dazzling chandeliers of Belgian crystal in the Durbar Hall. In this hall, the Nizams held court, presiding over religious ceremonies and symbolic events.

Meanwhile, the Council Hall, now a museum, houses rare manuscripts and priceless books, a testament to the palace's rich history.

But the story doesn't end there. Step into the Buggie Khaana, and you'll find a collection of vintage cars once belonging to the Nizams, a window into their opulent lifestyle.

Thus, the Chowmahalla Palace stands not just as a relic of the past, but as a living testament to Hyderabad's regal heritage, where each corner whispers tales of bygone splendor and royal grace.
