BirdingArmenia - the pioneer in organising and running birding tours in Armenia.
Our approach
BirdingArmenia’s team organizes and runs birding tours in Armenia already for the last two decades. In fact, we were involved in early stages of development of birdwatching tourism sector in the country and have run and guided the first birding tours in Armenia. Our tours cover the whole range of habitats and elevations in the Armenia, and we repeatedly reach 220+ species of birds ob
served during a standard spring-summer tours. Autumn tours are rewarding too - although missing some summer breeders, these are enriched with a good selection of passage migrants. In addition to birds we observe and photograph other wildlife – mammals, herps, butterflies, dragonflies etc. Historical and cultural attractions are frequent on our routes and in habitats we visit in search of birds, so beside wildlife we enjoy some of the most impressive pagan and medieval monuments found in the country. Secure transportation, comfortable accommodation, delicious local food and, of course, lots of birds - these are the attributes of our tours. We provide complete service, ensuring that your holidays in Armenia turn into memorable experience.

Birding at the foothills of Urts Mountains, Ararat province, Armenia.
A wonderful excursion with some great birds in the last days of winter.
-Otus scops-
Eurasian Scops Owl is one of the most desired birds to see on our tours, and it is easily found at few places en route.

Midwinter Snowcock-quest. Successful 👍👍
Caspian Snowcock (Tetraogallus caspius) is not the easiest bird to reach and see even in spring and summer, when its high altitude habitat is more accessible. But we thought, why not to visit the birds in winter? 😉

Birding in the Arpa River valley (Vayots Dzor, Armenia) is great at any time of year. Here are some record shots from my latest trip to the area last week. Many more birds were seen (48 sp overall), but the most attractive were winter visitors from northern latitudes and high-altitude specialists... Looking forward to my next field trip in 2023.
Hope the new year will bring a peace to the region and the country, although it's hard to be very optimistic about that...
Regardless, Happy New Year to all BirdingArmenia followers!

One of the special days on our spring and autumn tours is the visit to Caucasian Grouse habitats in subalpine meadows of Kotayk and Lori provinces, northern Armenia. Careful scan of the grassy slopes and talus fields - is the usual technique used in the search of the secretive grouse.
One of the Caspian Snowcock lookouts in Vayots Dzor, Armenia
Our Bird Watching tours cover the whole range of habitats and elevations throughout the country, and our tours repeatedly reach 220+ species of birds observed during a standard spring-summer tour!
-Jynx torquilla-
An elusive and a largely overlooked breeder in forests of NE and SE Armenia.

Highlights of Birding Armenia tours -
Francolinus francolinus - Black Francolin
This bird occurs only in dry subtropics of extreme south-east of Armenia on a border with Iran.
The species' population seems to do very well and it's is observed and heard on almost every visit to Arevik National Park.
Levant Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes)
A very good selection of raptors seen on a standard spring-summer birding tour to Armenia. But only one of them breeds almost exclusively in and around human settlements - in villages, towns and even public parks of Yerevan city.
White-winged Snowfinch (Montifringilla nivalis) deserves its name and most of the time seen with at least some snow around...
Highlights of Birding Armenia tours -
Hippolais languida - Upcher's Warbler
Another bird with restricted range in the Western Palearctic, where it breeds only in the south-eastern corner of the region.
In spring Upcher's Warbler arrives relatively late, from mid-May onward, but then it is easily found in dry gorges and mountain foothills, thanks to its distinct repetitive song and characteristic flight from bush to bush.
Highlights of Birding Armenia tours -
Melanocorypha bimaculata - Bimaculated Lark
In breeding season this lark is usually easily detected by its loud and unmistakable song audible at long distance. In contrast, locating a bird singing somewhere high in the sky is not a straightforward task, while finding a landed bird is sometimes even more complicated because of its perfect blend with the habitat.
Phoenicurus ochruros ochruros
General fieldguides to WP birds traditionally depict 'semirufus' race of the Black Redstart which has a tiny range in the Levant, but do not usually cover the quite similar variant of the closely related and highly variable nominate 'ochruros', which is found all over the Caucasus, NW Iran and E & C Turkey.
Surely this kind of nominate birds involved in most (if not all) of the cases with the 'semirufus' reports from the Caucasus.
Highlights of Birding Armenia tours -
Irania gutturalis - White-throated Robin (a.k.a. Irania)
Every birder visiting Armenia for a spring-summer tour, will surely have the White-throated Robin on his/her priority list.
Although secretive, this species is easily observed in various habitats and at various elevations throughout western and southern Armenia.
Highlights of Birding Armenia tours -
Prunella ocularis - Radde's Accentor
Radde's Accentor has very restricted range in the Western Palearctic. In Armenia, the species is found on most of the mountain ranges and upland plateaus, where it prefers gorges and slopes with abundance of rock and shrub.
By word of many visiting birders, Armenia is the easiest place in the WP, where you can see Radde's Accentor with minimal effort. In fact, the species habitats are accessible within half an hour drive from the capital city, on the slopes of Mount Aragats - a popular destination among birders for more than two decades now...
Highlights of Birding Armenia tours -
Vanellus leucurus - White-tailed Lapwing
The White-tailed Lapwing was first spotted in Armenia in May 1989, but only a decade later the species reappeared at the same site, when several apparently breeding pairs were found and provided great views to participants of the very first Birding Armenia tour. Soon afterwards their breeding here was proven, and since then small number of the lapwing is breeding in the country annually. The species in Armenia confined to a very small area in the Ararat Plain, where it occupies remaining patches of saline mudflats in fishfarms. The White-tailed Lapwing is Nationally Redlisted in Armenia.
Highlights of Birding Armenia tours -
Oenanthe chrysopygia - Red-tailed Wheatear
(a.k.a. Rufous-tailed Wheatear, Persian Wheatear, Afghan Wheatear etc.)
In Armenia, this species was known only from the country's extreme SE, on a border with Iran. But since the last 15 or so years the bird is expanding its range northward, and is now found closer to Yerevan in Ararat and Vayots Dzor provinces, thus becoming more accessible for visiting birders.
