HEARTWARMING KŐHEGY HIKE ON NOVEMBER 19.

I haven't posted for a while, as I was busy taking groups around Puglia, an absolutely magical region of Italy. Just a week ago I was walking around narrow, white-washed streets, olive groves and swimming in the crystal clear sea. I have to admit, it's not easy to get back to my home office, especially in this grey november weather.

So, we have decided to return to Kőhegy, our favourite autumn hike, with a visit to the house of Hamvas Béla, a well-known Hungarian writer. Whenever we are at this house, there is so much positive energy, colours, campfire, herbal tea and fruits from the garden, and above all the warm hospitality of Gyöngy, the owner of the house.

After visiting the house, we walk to the top of Kőhegy to enjoy amazing views and a nice lunch at the cultic hütte.

Trying "vanlife" has been on our bucket list for a while, so we rented a really cool van from Vanlifehungary for a few days. We did not have an exact plan, we just decided to head to the Bakony mountains. We absolutely loved the freedom and the flexibility . It's the perfect solution for our digital nomad lifestyle and a truly slow experience.

We were surrounded by pure nature, we visited some amazing lakes, but the best part was meeting local people. We talked about life in the countryside, their love for the land, the difficulties during this hot and dry summer.

Father and son - big Jani and small Jani - were sitting on their tractor, and they asked us if they could see our van. They have never seen anything like this, so we invited them for a visit. After chatting for a while they asked us if we liked zucchini. Of course we do. They jumped on their tractor, drove home, then in a few minutes came back on a small motorbike, with a bag of zucchini...

Due to the drought water levels are extremely low in Hungary and the situation is worrisome. At the same time, it gives us the chance to see Danube reefs we can only see rarely, relax and swim off these reefs in the middle of the river. You can also join us on our Danube Bend canoe tour on July 30. or August 6.

We start the tour in Zebegény and finish in Kismaros, stop on several islands and reefs, but of course we won't miss our favourite beach bars either.

This Sunday we are having lunch on one of our favourite islands in the Danube, Luppa. We'll be arriving by canoe, from Szentendre and we still have some empty spots in our canoes for you. Then after lunch we'll paddle all the way to the Római part.

The story of Luppa island dates back to 1932. Of course the island itself had been around for much longer, but it happenned in 1932 that a company bought the island, divided it into small plots, brought electricity to the island, created the water and sewer system and sold the plots. The success was guaranteed, doctors, engineers, factory directors and other well off people from Budapest bought ground here. It's paradise, a quiet, hidden place where you can escape your busy life, just outside the city limits. Ideal for slow travel. For decades people mainly used their houses here as holiday homes, came here for the weekends and during the summer, but today more and more people actually live here, enjoying slow life.

The island has a very unique atmosphere, also owing to the beautiful Bauhaus villas. When Kozma Lajos, one of the most important Bauhaus architects in Hungary built his house on Luppa, everyone wanted a similar house. So the history of the famous Bauhaus villas of Luppa island began. Today, it's almost impossible to buy a villa here, but if you get lucky, you need to have a fat bank account, as prices start at 70 million Hungarian forints.

Active gastro-weekend in the hidden villages of Baranya

On our last Gemenc tour, we found sand dunes instead of water in the riverbed. It was an amazing sight, really different to what we had experienced in previous years. Luckily we had a talented cameraman in our group, so we can share with you this drone video of the sandy island of Gemenc at low tide.

"Once we got to the former house of Béla Hamvas, a Hungarian writer and philosopher, the sun came out, and blue sky and bright colours made the house and its garden even more magical. The house hides in the forest and is like a retreat, a place for tranquility and inspiration. The current owner, Gyöngy, opened its gate for us and gave us the chance to experience the positive energy of this place for a few hours. Her personality harmonizes with the house, she is quiet, warm-hearted and lives a simple life. She prepared tea made of herbs she picked on Kőhegy, cooked chestnuts and baked quince from the huge garden. The tea and the campfire warmed us up after a cold morning."

Palkó Sándor, president of the council of Baranya county was quite a visionary man. One day he looked at the green valleys and realized this was the perfect area for some lakes. In the 1960s his dream came true and the Orfű lakes were created. The quiet Kovácsszénájai lake can be reached with an easy hike from Orfű.
