Wondering if you can hit the road in Sri Lanka as a foreigner?
I get asked this question a lot! ๐๐จ Yes, you can! But hold your horses... you'll need the right permits. It's a common query among travelers, and here's the lowdown:
Driving Dreams: Many travelers dream of cruising through Sri Lanka's scenic roads, whether on a motorbike or behind the wheel of a car. But before you rev up your engine, remember: it's essential to play by the rules and have a valid license.
License Limbo: So, what about that international driver's license everyone talks about? Well, here's the twist โ it doesn't hold sway in Sri Lanka. ๐คทโโ๏ธ Surprised? You're not alone! Unlike in most countries, waving around an international permit won't cut it here.
Permit Predicament: If you're itching to explore Sri Lanka on wheels, you'll need to jump through a few hoops. Tourists aiming to drive a car or ride a motorbike must secure the right permits. So, does this mean you should slam the brakes on your rental plans? Or should you roll the dice and hope the cops turn a blind eye? ๐ฒ๐
The verdict? It's all about getting the paperwork sorted. So, buckle up, follow the rules, and get ready to hit the road โ legally! ๐ฃ๏ธโ
Luckily there are two ways around all this (As for my knowledge). It involves applying for a temporary Sri Lankan driverโs license which takes just about an hour to get. There are like two different agencies providing the license services
1. DMT (Department Of Motor Traffic)
2. AA Ceylon
The main difference between obtaining a temporary driver's license from the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) and AA Ceylon is the issuing authority. The Department of Motor Traffic is a government agency responsible for vehicle registration and licensing, while AA Ceylon is a private organization affiliated with the Automobile Association providing similar services. Both should provide valid temporary driver's licenses, but you may want to consider factors like convenience, cost, and reputation when choosing between them.
Here are some pros and cons for both:
Department of Motor Traffic(DMT)
Pros:
1. Government authority: DMT is the official government agency responsible for motor vehicle registration and licensing, which may give a sense of reliability and
2. legitimacy.Standardized procedures: DMT follows standardized procedures regulated by the government, potentially ensuring consistency in the licensing process.
3. Widely recognized: Licenses issued by DMT are widely recognized and accepted both nationally and internationally.
4. More affordable price tag: The whole process will cost you about 1000 LKR (As Iโve last checked, prices could change)
Cons:
1. Potentially bureaucratic: Government agencies can sometimes be bureaucratic, leading to longer processing times or more paperwork.
2. Limited flexibility: DMT may have stricter requirements or less flexibility in accommodating special circumstances compared to private organizations.
3. Inconvenient locations: The DMT office may be located in Colombo only ( As far as my knowledge), which could be inconvenient for some applicants.
AA Ceylon:
Pros:
1. Convenience: AA Ceylon may offer more convenient locations and operating hours for obtaining a temporary driver's license.
2. Possibly faster processing: Private organizations like AA Ceylon might have faster processing times due to fewer bureaucratic procedures.
3. Additional services: AA Ceylon might offer additional services or perks beyond just issuing licenses, such as roadside assistance or driving courses.
Cons:
1. Private organization: As a private organization, AA Ceylon's standards and procedures may not be as strictly regulated or standardized as those of government agencies.
2. Cost: Services provided by private organizations like AA Ceylon may come with additional fees or costs compared to government agencies. The whole process will cost you about 8000 LKR (As Iโve last checked, prices could change)
Consider these factors based on your preferences and needs when deciding which option to choose. Since Iโm a little familiar with the DMT process I will be explaining in short below.
๐ Where to Apply: Head over to the Department of Motor Traffic in Werahera, which is just a 30-minute drive from Colombo.
๐ Best Time to Go: Aim to arrive early in the morning to avoid long queues. Remember, the office is closed on Sundays and holidays.
๐ Documents Needed: Make sure to bring along your passport, a copy of your passport, a copy of your Sri Lankan visa, your valid driving license from your country, and a copy of your driving license.
๐ The Process: Once you're at the Department of Motor Traffic, look for hall 'H'. Inside, find Counter 1 where your documents will be verified. Then, proceed to Counters 17-20 for document scanning. After that, head to Counter 31 to make the payment of 1000 LKR. Finally, go to Counters 14-15 for the final approval and collect your permit from Counter 31.
That's it! With these simple steps, you'll have your temporary driving permit ready to explore the beautiful roads of Sri Lanka hassle-free. Happy driving! ๐ฃ๏ธ๐ด
