Closure of Tulip garden: Rs 1000 Crore losses to ailing tourism industry, allied sectors

Had a plan to keep garden open for 45 days this season many new things but Covid-19 changed entire discourse: Garden Incharge Sheikh Altaf

Srinagar, Mar 25 : At a time when Kashmir was all set to showcase the beauty of Asia’s largest Tulip garden overlooking famous Dal Lake in Srinagar where 13 lakh tulips were on a display for guests from March 25 onwards, the deadly Covid-19 played a spoil-sport forcing the closure of the garden. The closure of garden has not caused a dent to the already ailing tourism sector but resulted in the losses of Rs 1000 Crore to Tulip garden and all its associated sectors that include tourism, vendors, shikara owners, houseboat owners, hoteliers, and last but not the least cab drivers.

“For that maintenance of garden and importing Tulip bulbs, we would have spent Rs 60 Rs 80 lakh,” Tulip garden incharge, Sheikh Altaf told wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). He said that they were planning to keep the garden open for 45 days this season with the expectation that at least two lakh guests including locals and tourists would visit the garden. “That would have fetched us Rs 1 Crore which would go directly to the treasury of J&K UT,” he said. “We are not able to earn that Rs 1 crore. What is more important the allied sectors like houseboat, shikara wallas, tour operators, street vendors, stall owners, tea sellers, barbecue sellers, cab drivers, hoteliers and many other sectors associated with the Tulip garden have borne the brunt. And total losses of Tulip garden and all these allied sectors is not less than Rs 1000 Crore, but it’s a huge chain which has broken apart due to Covid-19.”

As per KNO, the garden was set to open between March 25 to April 1 any time this year but will remain closed now till Covid-19 threat is over. The Floriculture department had introduced “Cherry garden theme” on the lines of Japan while as different varieties of flowers will be kept on a display at the entry and exit points to woo guests.

This year, the department had introduced one lakh additional Tulips to its 12 lakh bulbs in the garden. A water channel in the backyards of the garden to attract visitors and to prolong their stay in the garden was also a major attraction. Last year 2.58 lakh visitors including foreign and domestic tourists visited the garden.

There was also a proposal to introduce a Cherry garden theme on the lines of one in Japan to increase the visitor’s attraction in the garden. Pertinently, the tourism sector has been badly hit in Kashmir since August 5 last year, when Government of India (GoI) announced abrogation of Article 370 and sliced the erstwhile state into two Union Territories (UTs)—J&K and Ladakh.

According to tour operators, tourist footfall has been drastically down since August last year leaving the people associated with the tourism industry in a deep crisis. However, hopes to revive the tourism sector have again fallen flat with the fast spreading novel Caronavirus, which has plunged entire world into a medical emergency—(KNO)

What makes an extreme high altitude mountaineer, extreme solo climber, high altitude expert, leader and guide ?

Myself and Mingma David Sherpa were dropped at Kanchenjunga base camp at 11am (14th May). We went for the summit push directly from the base camp at 13:00 that same day. With 5 sleep deprived days and battered by the weather summiting Dhaulagiri, we still made it to the summit of Kanchenjunga on 15 May 11:19.

Whilst descending we met an Indian climber (Biplop) at 8450m with his guide; both had ran out of oxygen(O2) and needed rescuing. We gave them our spare O2 and started the rescue mission.

We immediately requested for a back up team from camp 4, with extra O2 if possible. After descending 150m, we found another climber (Kuntal), who was left behind by his guide and his team. Both were clients of Peak Promotion. I gave him my own O2 and continued with the rescue mission. After descending a few more meters, our guide Geshman Tamang then had to give his O2 away. So by 1430 all my team had given away our own O2 to the two climbers.

If you can imagine how hard it is to operate a rescue mission at 8450m without O2. Every 15-20 mins, I was on the radio asking for help with O2.

I was told 3 Sherpa’s were coming up with O2, this never happened. I was told this every time I radioed asking. This seriously impacted my team and was a huge risk to life.

Geshman started developing mild HACE and his feet started to freeze. I sent him back down. By this point we had sadly lost Kuntal due to no back up with the extra O2. The wind started picking up, but we continued rescuing Biplop.

Now the strongest Sherpa, I have ever known Mingma appeared to be having HACE. We could not afford to have another casualty with NO HELP coming up so I sent Mingma down. Leaving just Dawa and myself with NO O2 performing the rescue.

There were many climbers, approx 50 on Kanchenjunga this season. Both life could have been saved if someone from that many climbers had dared to help. The Project Possible team needed help to save lives but got none.

So my question on the top remains unanswered

The deadly Shark’s Fin, a steep, overhanging and previously unclimbed granite wall on the 6,310m central peak of Meru in the Himalayas, has long been viewed as one of the last remaining challenges of big wall mountaineering.
