This grand Louisville landmark was designed to impress when it opened in 1923, with its Georgian Revival facade, hand-painted coffered ceilings, mahogany furnishings, and Botticino limestone floors. (Befitting such pomp and circumstance, David Lloyd George, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom, was the first person to sign the guest register.) The 293 guest rooms and suites feature thoughtful touches, such as equestrian prints and racing-themed throw blankets. But to truly get a taste of Derby City, you’ll need to order a Hot Brown: The open-faced turkey sandwich, topped with bacon and Mornay sauce, debuted here in 1926.

Housed in an 18th-century mansion surrounded by lavender and cypress trees, this Relais & Chateaux property is a draw for both its proximity to Aix-en-Provence (it's a 15-minute walk to Cours Mirabeau) and countryside seclusion. The 23 rooms and suites have either a private garden of views of the sprawling grounds, and each one is outfitted in toile, cream, and crimson Louis XV furnishings. The outdoor pool is, of course, a highlight, as is the on-site wine cellar and spa. Head to the restaurant for a seasonal menu that pairs Provençale, French, and Mediterranean dishes with Bordeaux, Burgundy, and local wines—all served on the terrace during the summer.

To book a stay at this impeccably designed escape, guests must send an inquiry through the website—a sign of just how exclusive the hotel is. The reward is an extremely private getaway with a relaxing natural, neutral design. A 1950s-era beach motel was transformed into this serene escape, which opened in April 2017. The hotel is a study in high-design restraint—which is clear after setting one foot inside its almost hidden entrance. Guests enter into a courtyard that looks out onto the ocean, which leads to a beautiful garden. Follow the path to a deck made from ipe wood that overlooks Carbon Beach and Malibu Pier.

Surrounded by the most splendid gardens on the Amalfi Coast, this historic Ravello property can trace its origins back to the 11th century. The villa was largely rebuilt in the early 1900s by Lord Grimthorpe (an English co-designer of Big Ben), and it soon attracted the likes of Virginia Woolf, Greta Garbo, and E.M. Forster. The sumptuously decorated suites include vaulted ceilings, Majolica tile floors, and cheerful frescoes. Michelin-starred restaurant Il Flauto di Pan serves elegant twists on homestyle local dishes, such as white rabbit ragù and marinated Cetara anchovies. But the villa’s simplest delight is also its most spectacular: Gore Vidal once said that the view from the garden’s belvedere was the most beautiful place in the world.

A fitting emblem of the new Perth, The Treasury is part of the ambitious Cathedral Square development, a $580 million reinvention of a cluster of 19th-century state treasury and Anglican Diocese buildings on the edge of the Central Business District, which sat empty for more than 20 years before the COMO outpost moved in. Almost every detail in the hotel (which primarily occupies the top floors of three 140-year-old buildings) has been returned to its original state, from the reinstalled dormer windows to the roofline’s copper trim. Check out Wildflower, the hotel's glassed-in rooftop restaurant, for a taste of this pioneer city's thriving food scene, courtesy of executive chef Jed Gerrard, and David Thompson’s Thai street-food joint, Long Chim, adjacent to the hotel.

This hotel has the ability to transport you to a relaxing oasis miles from the hustle and bustle of busy Dallas, despite being in the middle of Uptown. The spa and pool make it hard to beat, while a 2018 renovation has left the rooms and suites with incredible interior design and abundant natural light, via floor-to-ceiling windows. Food and drink is on point with the Dallas outpost of Nobu and stellar cocktails at Beau Nash.

Pioneering female architect Lilian J. Rice drew on Spanish, Cuban, and Mexican adobe inspirations when designing the original 1923 guesthouse in the hills outside San Diego; in the intervening 90-plus years, the property has expanded into a 21-acre country retreat with new cottages, a spa, “coastal ranch” cuisine, and a whiskey bar inspired by the old Santa Fe Hunt Club. Guests can hit the tennis courts, join a yoga class, book a spa treatment, or play a round at the Max Behr-designed Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, which opened in 1929 and is set to complete extensive renovations this November.

Dublin’s Docklands are known as the “Silicon Docks,” with the European headquarters of Facebook, Google, and Airbnb all taking up residence here. The Marker Hotel, a sleek geometric building in the middle of Grand Canal Square, is the district’s unofficial landmark. There’s a hip vibe throughout, from the light-filled lobby to the bedrooms bursting with pops of color. The moodily lit infinity pool is the best in the city, with a eucalyptus-scented steam room. Open seasonally, the rooftop bar has killer views of the city and as far out as the Dublin mountains. Guests have guaranteed access—and you're guaranteed to make friends with the bartenders.

All things cozy and Austrian meet in this legendary inn, which first welcomed guests in the 15th century and now lists Prince Charles among its loyal fans. The hotel is in the heart of the medieval old town, surrounded by shops displaying wrought-iron guild signs. You can walk to pretty much anything, including Mozart’s birthplace, just down the street. Because driving can be a hassle—pedestrian-only areas, inscrutable road signs—you’re better off taking the train from Vienna or Munich. If it wasn’t so authentic, you’d swear a set designer had orchestrated the vaulted ceilings, antique farmers’ furniture, stag heads, and staff in lederhosen and dirndls.
