Friday brought us back to where it all began - San Cristobal Island for some more incredible up close experiences with giant tortoises at the Tortoise Breeding Center. Being right next to these incredible animals will never get old! 🐢💕
Back onboard, we enjoyed one last gorgeous sail and sunset with some whales gracing us with a perfect send off! Cheers to one incredible journey! 🥂
So thankful the past month has been so busy I haven’t even had time to post about one of the most epic afternoons of the trip - a stop at Punta Suarez on Isla Espanola. Haven to Christmas Igaunas, mating Albatross, more blue footed bo***es, newborn sea lions and the elusive Galapagos Hawk! Plus some of the most dramatic gorgeous scenery.
Beyond grateful for such a unique and incredible experience!
Thursday morning had a beautiful relaxing start in stunning Gardner Bay on the island of Espanola.
I enjoyed the beautiful beach practically to myself (with the exception of some sea lion friends!) and got to explore the gorgeous coast by kayak with sea turtles popping up all around 🥰
Next up was Santa Fe Island - an incredible destination with such fun animal diversity all in one small spot!
Sea lions were EVERYWHERE! Making for one of the most fun snorkels I’ve ever had! On land, the endemic Santa Fe Iguana was quite the looker, and the unique Palo Santo trees were so incredible to inspect up close!
Did I mention the most adorable sea lions everywhere?! 😍
Wednesday was TORTOISE day! 🐢
We landed on Santa Cruz Island, one of the most populated islands in the Galapagos, and took a short ride up to the Highlands to see the famous giant tortoises - for which the Galapagos are named after!
Seeing so many giant tortoises in the wild was simply remarkable. Their size, movement, and expressions were mesmerising - and made us feel as if we had been transported to pre-historic times!
The largest tortoises can get over 600 lbs and reach well over 100 years old! Truly a bucket list experience to see up close in the wild!
After lunch Tuesday we sailed to Isabella Island - keeping our eyes out for whales along the way!
Our afternoon zodiac brought us up close to more penguins! Iguanas on iguanas! Flightless cormorants, Darwin finches and the most breathtaking scenery!
We spent Tuesday morning on Fernandina Island exploring the coastline via zodiac and soaking up the views of marine iguanas, blue-footed bo***es, sea lions and the infamous Galápagos penguin! Truly stunning scenery and wildlife!
Monday afternoon brought us to beautiful Sullivan Bay on the island of Santiago.
This desolate volcanic coast, one of the youngest land masses in the Galapagos (only 150 years old!), is like being on a completely other planet!
Leaping rock to rock while learning about the geologic process was truly an afternoon to remember! And made for some fabulous backgrounds too 😍
Monday morning brought us to North Seymour - a small but bustling island with seabirds, sea lions, crabs, and iguanas galour! Oh and way too many sharks 😳
The island is a big nesting area for Common and Magnificent frigate birds - an incredible site to see during mating season (which we were in!) to witness the males blow up their red gular pouches to attract the ladies!
After departing San Cristóbal Island, we crossed back north over the equator for Genovesa - one of the most northern islands of the archipelago and a bird lovers paradise.
This is one of the few places where famous Galapagos birds such as red-footed bo***es, Nazca bo***es and Great Frigate birds all nest together in giant colonies. An incredible sight to hike through.
Great Darwin Bay, where we anchored, was also the perfect spot for some morning snorkelling and afternoon kayaking along the gorgeous volcanic cliffs. Overall, a perfect first day exploring!
Next stop: the Galapagos!
Landed on San Cristobal Island to board the incredible new Silver Origin! We had a sunset sail around the breathtaking kicker rock while settling into our beautiful home for the week!
Journey to the Galapagos begins!
First stop in Guayaquil, also known as the gateway to the Galapagos! The largest city in Ecuador 🇪🇨 and most important port - plus only a 4.5 hour flight from Miami - Guayaquil was the perfect base to begin the trip.
Our gracious hosts Silversea included 2 nights pre-expedition to explore this lovely town, which highlights included plenty of wandering, 1 required PCR test, lots of client work, an evening city tour and beautiful dinner at the gorgeous + delicious Hotel del Parque.
