Have you heard of the Hemlock woolly adelgid? They’re tiny insects that are harming Hemlock trees throughout the state. These critters are also known as non-native invasive species (NNIS) which are any animal, plant, or insect that has been introduced to a new area and cause ecological damage. We will point out NNIS on our hikes and what you can do to prevent them from spreading to new areas.

A common question folks ask is “How old is the New River?” Scientists have worked to answer this question for years, and ironically, the New River is anywhere from 10 - 360 million years old!

Look at the fun fungi! The Pear-shaped puffballs (Apioperdon pyriforme), in this video, are decomposing a fallen log. Towards the end of their lifecycle, the top of the puffball opens up where spores can be released when disturbed by wind,rain, or animals.

Did you know WV has over 30 species of salamanders? One species that can be found in the state is the Northern Slimy Salamander (Plethodon glutinosus). This salamander is nocturnal and comes out at night to eat small invertebrates. If you’re lucky, you might see some when you hike with us! (www.wvhikingco.com)

With the weather getting warmer, lots of birds will be out for spring! You may even see the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) while hiking with us (www.wvhikingco.com). Some of these birds migrate 800 miles during migration!
