For those planning to visit Thailand in the coming days, please be aware that not only is this is an official period of mourning but that the grief felt by the Thai people is deep and heartfelt, far more so than most foreigners could understand or imagine.
- Respectful clothing and behaviour is more important than ever. Skimpy outfits (worn off the beach) or public drunkenness may cause offence.
- Tours and activities, as well as shops, restaurants etc. will be open / operating as normal, though many bars and entertainment venues will choose to close for 1 - 7 days out of respect.
- Try to show understanding in case of changes, delays or cancellations to your plans, especially if travelling through the capital, as ceremonies or processions may cause closures of roads, temples and palaces.
- If visiting any temples during this time, black / dark coloured conservative clothing would be appropriate and refrain from disturbing or photographing mourners.
The official mourning period is one year from today, 14 October 2016, with a request to cease or "tone down" entertainment activities for 30 days.
Follow the local media to stay current of any new information. A useful page is being updated on Thai Visa: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/948710-updated-info-on-closures-changes-and-protocol-during-the-mourning-period/
Your visit to Thailand is, as always, most welcome; just be mindful that your hosts are feeling the loss of a most beloved father, and act accordingly.
